Flex sections
Flex sections in Local: Flex slideshow, Flex grid, Flex cards and Flex columns, built from theme blocks you can arrange freely.
Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 2.7.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.
Flex sections give you more layout control than the other sections. Each one is a frame of slides, cards or columns, and you fill them with theme blocks (heading, caption, text, buttons, images, star ratings and more) in any order, without code. Use them for landing pages, promotions and hero banners.
Where to find it: Online Store → Themes → Customize → Add section → Flex slideshow, Flex grid, Flex cards or Flex columns
Flex slideshow & grid sections were introduced in version 2.7.0, flex cards in 3.1.0 and flex columns in 4.0.0.
Which Flex section do I use?
| Section | What it is | Holds theme blocks in |
|---|---|---|
| Flex slideshow | A large slideshow with image or video slides | Image slides |
| Flex grid | A grid or collage of media cards and text cards, sized on 12 columns, in four presets | Text cards |
| Flex cards | A row of cards with media on top and blocks below | Cards |
| Flex columns | Columns as a grid or slider, for features or steps | Columns |
- For a hero banner with several messages, use the Flex slideshow. For one banner, use the Fullwidth media with text preset of the Flex grid.
- For a collage of images with some text, use the Flex grid (Media collage or Text cards collage preset).
- For product categories or promotions with an image above the text, use Flex cards.
- For a row of icons with short texts, use Flex columns.
Theme blocks in Flex sections
Every slide, card or column accepts the same eleven theme blocks, plus app blocks:
- Heading, Caption and Text for words.
- Button and Quick buy button for actions.
- Image for icons and logos, Star rating for social proof.
- Divider, Empty space and Content group for layout.
- Custom Liquid for your own code.
The section sets where the blocks sit (alignment, text width, spacing between blocks); each block sets its own look (size, style, color).
Corners follow Theme settings → Borders → Cards: no Flex section has a corner radius setting of its own.
Content groups
A Content group block puts several small blocks side by side in one row: two buttons, a row of logos, a set of caption badges. It accepts only Button, Image, Caption and Quick buy button blocks. Horizontal spacing between blocks sets the gap (Small or Medium).
Building a Flex section
Add the section
In the theme editor, open the page, select Add section and choose a Flex section (or one of the Flex grid presets). Each preset starts with example slides, cards or columns.
Set the frame
Select the section and set its layout: the height (Flex slideshow), the row height and grid (Flex grid), the media height (Flex cards) or the number of columns (Flex columns).
Add slides, cards or columns
Select Add block at the bottom of the section's block list and choose the slide, card or column type. Drag them into order.
Add blocks inside
Select a slide, card or column, then select Add block inside it and pick the theme blocks it should show. Drag the blocks to change their order.
Style the blocks
Select each block and set its text, size and colors. Set the shared placement (alignment, spacing) in the section's Typography or Text style group.
Can I use theme blocks in other sections?
No. Theme blocks work in the four Flex sections and in the Column of the Table section. Other sections, such as Rich text or Promotion cards, have their own blocks with fixed settings. See Blocks.
Why do the links inside my card or slide not work?
Because the card or slide has its own Link. When the whole slide or text card is a link, the buttons and links inside it are disabled. Remove the card's Link if it has buttons.
