Countdown banner section

The Countdown banner section of Local counts down to a date and time, with a heading, text and button, for sales and launches.

Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 2.5.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.

The Countdown banner section shows a clock that counts down to a date and time, next to a heading, text and a button. Use it for a flash sale, a launch or the end of an offer.

Layout

Style sets Regular (heading, text and button next to the clock) or Compact (a slim bar with only the heading and the button).
Text alignment aligns the text on desktop: Left, Center or Right.
Under Section design, Fullwidth stretches the banner to the edges of the screen; Remove top margin and Remove bottom margin remove the space above or below it.
Under Custom card design, Background, Text, Border and Shadow override the card colors; Hide border and Hide shadow remove them.

Countdown clock

End year, End month, End day and End hour set when the countdown ends. The hour is 0 to 24, in 24-hour format.
Timezone is the time zone of that end time, as an offset from GMT (GMT -12:00 to GMT +12:00). Every customer sees the same moment, converted to their own clock.
Position puts the clock On the left or On the right (default) of the text.

The clock shows days, hours, minutes and seconds. When the end time has passed, it stops at 00 : 00 : 00 : 00 and the banner stays on the page.

A new Countdown banner starts with the end date 2025-01-01, which is already in the past, so the clock shows zeros. Set the end date first. End year goes up to 2029.

Blocks

Heading

The Heading block (one per section) is the banner title, for example "Flash Sale". Its Heading tag is under SEO.

Text

The Text block (up to two) is a short rich text, for example the terms of the offer. Text size sets Regular or Large. The Compact style does not show it.

Button

The Button block (one per section) links to the sale. Set Button label, Button link, Open link in a new window and Button style (Outline or Solid).

Does the countdown end my sale?

No. The countdown is only a clock on the page. It does not change prices, end discounts or hide products. Schedule the discount or the sale prices in Shopify admin (Discounts, or the compare-at prices of your products), and remove or hide the section when the sale is over.

Which time zone should I choose?

The time zone in which you think of the end time. If your sale ends at midnight in New York in winter, set End hour to 0 and Timezone to GMT -5:00. The setting is a fixed offset: it does not follow daylight saving time, so pick the offset that applies on the end date.

Accepts these blocks: Heading, Text and Button.

Style (dropdown, default: Regular): Regular shows the heading, text and button next to the clock. Compact is a slim bar with the heading and button only. Options: Regular, Compact.

Text alignment (dropdown, default: Left): Only on desktop. Options: Left, Center, Right.

End year (slider 2020 to 2029, default: 2025): Sets the year the countdown ends. The default, 2025, is already past: set your own date.

End month (slider 1 to 12, default: 1).

End day (slider 1 to 31, default: 1).

End hour (slider 0 to 24, default: 0): Sets the hour the countdown ends, 0 to 24, in 24-hour format.

Timezone (dropdown, default: GMT): Sets the time zone of the end time, as a fixed offset from GMT. It does not follow daylight saving time. Options: GMT -12:00, GMT -11:00, GMT -10:00, GMT -9:00, GMT -8:00, GMT -7:00, GMT -6:00, GMT -5:00, GMT -4:00, GMT -3:00, GMT -2:00, GMT -1:00, GMT, GMT +1:00, GMT +2:00, GMT +3:00, GMT +4:00, GMT +5:00, GMT +6:00, GMT +7:00, GMT +8:00, GMT +9:00, GMT +10:00, GMT +11:00, GMT +12:00.

Position (dropdown, default: On the right): Puts the clock on the left or the right of the text. Options: On the left, On the right.

The Countdown banner section uses the standard Section design settings, listed in General section styling. In this section the group has only Fullwidth, Remove top margin and Remove bottom margin.

These settings differ from the standard ones or exist only here:

Fullwidth (checkbox, default: off): Extend the background of this section to fill the screen.

Remove bottom margin (checkbox, default: off): Removes the space below the section, so it touches the section after it.

Heading block

Heading tag (dropdown, default: H3): Specify heading level to help search engines index the structure of your page. Options: H1, H2, H3, H4, span.

Text size (dropdown, default: Regular). Options: Regular, Large.

Button label (text field, default: "Learn more").

Button link (link): Sets the page the button opens.

Open link in a new window (checkbox, default: off). Shown only when Button link is set.

Button style (dropdown, default: Outline). Options: Outline, Solid.
