Local presets
Local presets: the five Theme Store presets Local, Caffeine, Soleway, Lively and Thrive, and the videos that rebuild the online demos.
Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.
Local comes in five presets on the Shopify Theme Store: Local, Caffeine, Soleway, Lively and Thrive. This page compares them, explains what a preset changes and how to switch, and links the videos that rebuild the online demos.
Where to find it: Theme settings → Theme style (in the theme editor), or the preset you choose on the Local page of the Shopify Theme Store.
What a preset changes
All five presets install the same theme files: the same sections, blocks, settings and templates. A preset only selects one of Local's five theme styles. The theme style sets the fonts, the colors and the values of some Theme settings, such as the product card style, the custom badges and the cart type.
| Preset | Added in | Fonts (headings / body) | Look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local | Local 1.0.0 | DM Sans Medium / DM Sans | White, dark text, green accent, dark footer |
| Caffeine | Local 2.6.0 | Jost Medium / Jost | Warm coffee brown, black footer |
| Soleway | – | DM Sans Medium / DM Sans | White, black text, amber accent, black footer |
| Lively | – | DM Sans Medium / DM Sans | Off-white with a dark header and footer, orange accent |
| Thrive | Local 3.1.0 | Outfit Medium / DM Sans | White and cream, brown text, orange accent |
The values are those of each theme style in Local 4.2.1. Each preset page lists the other settings it changes.
Theme style and Theme Store preset
- A Theme Store preset is the version of Local you install from the Shopify Theme Store, for example Caffeine. Every preset installs the same theme files and selects its own theme style.
- A theme style is a set of Theme settings values bundled in the theme. Every Local install contains all five, and you can switch between them in the theme editor.
What switching style changes
Switching style is a Shopify theme editor feature. It replaces your current Theme settings with the values saved in the new style: fonts, colors, layout spacing, borders, shadows, product card and badge settings, the cart settings and a few others. It does not change the sections and blocks of your pages, or your products and content.
Switching style overwrites the Theme settings you changed yourself, for example your colors, fonts and custom badge tags. Duplicate the theme in Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes before you switch, so you can go back.
Switching to another preset
Duplicate your theme
Open Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. On your Local theme, open the … menu and select Duplicate. Work on the copy.
Open Theme style
Open the copy in the theme editor and open Theme settings (the gear icon in the sidebar) → Theme style.
Choose the style
Select Local, Caffeine, Soleway, Lively or Thrive. The preview shows the new fonts and colors.
Check the preset's badges and cart
Open Theme settings → Product card and check the custom badges: some presets set their own badge texts and tags. Check Theme settings → Cart as well, then select Save.
Publish the copy
Check the main pages, then publish the copy from Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes.
Theme demo setups
Shopify does not let a theme copy the content of its online demo into your store, so a new install starts with the theme's default sections and no demo products. To help you rebuild what you see in the demos, Krown recorded these videos. They show the sections and settings used in each demo.
The demo setup of the Local preset (the "Light" main demo in the old docs).
The demo setup of the Caffeine preset (the coffee demo).
Can I copy the demo content into my store?
No. Shopify does not support copying a theme demo's products, pages, images or extra templates into your store. Rebuild the pages with sections, using the demo setup videos above. The demos also use extra templates, such as recipe blog posts or an "our stores" page; they are demo content, not part of the preset, and you create them in the theme editor if you need them.
Can I switch presets later?
Yes, at any time, with Theme settings → Theme style. Switching changes only Theme settings values, not your sections and content, but it overwrites the Theme settings you changed yourself. Duplicate the theme first.
