Slideshow (legacy) section

The Slideshow (legacy) section of Combine is the old horizontal slideshow; it stays on stores that use it but cannot be added again.

Applies to: Combine 4.2.0 and later. Added in: Combine 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Combine 4.2.0.

The Slideshow (legacy) section is Combine's original horizontal slideshow: up to 6 image or video slides, each with a caption, a title and a button. It stays on the pages of stores that already use it, but it can no longer be added from Add section. For new slideshows, use the Flex slideshow section.

Where to find it: on a page that already has it, select Slideshow (legacy) in the theme editor sidebar. It is not in the Add section list.

Why can I not add the legacy slideshow any more?

Because Combine 3.1.0 replaced it with Flex slideshow, which builds the text of each slide from theme blocks. The legacy section has no preset, so Shopify does not list it under Add section. Your existing slideshows keep working and keep their settings through updates.

Move a legacy slideshow to Flex slideshow

Add a Flex slideshow

On the same page, select Add section and choose Flex slideshow. Drag it next to the legacy slideshow.

Copy the slideshow settings

Set Desktop height, Mobile height, Auto height, Enable autorotate, Interval, Fullwidth and the Text style settings as in the legacy slideshow. The labels and options are the same.

Rebuild each slide

For each legacy slide, add an Image or Video slide and select the same media. Inside it, add a Caption block, a Heading block and a Button block for the caption, title and button.

Remove the legacy slideshow

Check the new slideshow on desktop and mobile, then select the legacy slideshow and Remove section.

Height

  • Desktop height and Mobile height set the slide height as a share of the screen height: Small (40 percent), Regular (50 percent), Medium (60 percent), Large (80 percent, the default on desktop) or Full (100 percent). The mobile default is Medium. Slides are never shorter than 450 px.
  • Mobile height applies below 1024 px.
  • Auto height makes each slide as tall as its image, so nothing is cropped, and ignores both heights.

Autorotate

  • Enable autorotate moves to the next slide on its own. Interval sets the time per slide, 3 to 10 seconds (default 5).
  • Fullwidth (on by default) stretches the slideshow to the edges of the screen.

Text style

  • Text alignment places the text of every slide in one of nine positions (default Left bottom).
  • Caption size and Title size set the size of the caption and the title.
  • Text spacing sets the gap between caption, title and button, from -12 to 60 px (default 18 px).
  • Text container width limits the width of the text: Small, Medium or Large (the default).
  • Text blending mode blends the text with the image: Normal, Exclusion, Soft light or Overlay.
  • Button style is Solid (the default) or Outline.

Custom card design

Border radius rounds the corners of the slides, 0 to 30 px, when the slideshow is not full width. Remove top margin under Gutter removes the space above the section.

Blocks

Image

  • Image is the slide background. Mobile image (optional) replaces it on screens narrower than 768 px.
  • Caption, Title and Button label are the text of the slide.
  • Link is where the slide goes. With a Button label, the link is on the button; without one, the title becomes the link.
  • Overlay and Text under Design set a color over the image and the text color.
  • Heading tag under SEO sets the HTML level of the title (default H2).

Video

  • Video plays muted in a loop as the slide background. Fallback image shows on phones that block autoplay.
  • Use different media on mobile shows Mobile video file and Mobile poster image on small screens.
  • Caption, Title, Link, Button label, Overlay, Text and Heading tag work as on the Image slide.

What image size should I use for the legacy slideshow?

The slides fill a share of the screen height and crop the image at the edges. For a full-width slideshow, upload images at least 1920 px wide, or twice that for sharp high-density screens, and portrait images about 750 px wide (1500 px for sharp screens) for Mobile image (optional). See Image size recommendations.
