Sections

Sections in Split: every section you can add with Add section, by category, with what it does on desktop and the page that documents it.

Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.

A section is a full-width area of a page, such as a slideshow, a product grid or a contact form. Split builds many sections from two halves of the screen, side by side on desktop and stacked on phones; see How Split is built.

Where to find it: open a page in the theme editor, then select Add section in the left sidebar.

Every section on this list can be added to a page template, moved, duplicated and hidden. Most sections hold their own blocks, such as slides, testimonials or questions, documented on the section's page. Only the Flex cards and Flex grid sections hold theme blocks.

Sections by category

Split 5.1.0 has 31 entries in Add section on a page template, in eight categories. The Layout on desktop column says how the section uses the screen on screens wider than 1024 px. On phones and on tablets held upright, every section is full width and its halves stack.

Fullwidth media with text, Flex grid and Media collage are three presets of one section. After you add one, the editor calls it Flex grid.

Section names in older Split versions

Some sections were renamed over the years. If an old guide or video uses an old name, look for the new one:

  • Split screen slider is now Slideshow. You can add it anywhere on a page and duplicate it like any other section.
  • Featured collection slider is now Collection slider.
  • Image with text is now Images with text.
  • Custom contact form is now Contact Form.
  • Newsletter and Email signup form are now Email signup, a section of its own since Split 4.0.0.
  • The old "announcement bar" section became the Heading section. Today's Announcement bar section is a different section in the Header group.
  • The Countdown banner was part of the old "Promotions/sales" page template. It is now a section you add to any page.

Some sections live in a section group instead of a page template. They show on every page.

  • The Header group holds the Announcement bar, the Header and the Breadcrumb.
  • The Footer group holds the Footer and, in the presets, a Text columns with icons and an Email signup section.
  • The Overlay group holds the sections that open over the page: the Popup, the Cookies banner and the Promotional banner.

Most content sections cannot be added to the Header group or the Overlay group. Add section there lists only the sections that fit.

Sections of page templates

Each page template has a main section that shows the page's own content, such as the product, the collection or the article. You cannot remove it, but you can add sections above or below it. See the Page templates pages, for example Product page, Collection page, Blog page and Regular page.

How do I hide a section without deleting it?

Select the eye icon next to the section's name in the theme editor sidebar. The section keeps its settings and blocks, and customers no longer see it. Select the eye icon again to show it.

Why can't I find a section in Add section?

Because it belongs to a section group. The Header, Footer, Breadcrumb, Popup and Cookies sections have no Add section entry: they are already in their groups. The Promotional banner appears in Add section only inside the Overlay group, and the Announcement bar only inside the Header group or the Footer group.
