Rich text section
The Rich text section shows a title, text and buttons next to a background image in Split, with the image on the left or right half.
Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.
The Rich text section splits the screen in two halves: a large title and button over a background image on one half, and your text on the other half. Use it for a brand story, an about block or a call to action.
Where to find it: select Add section in the theme editor, then choose Rich text.
Title, button and image
The section settings fill the image half.
- Title shows a large heading. Heading tag under SEO sets its HTML level (H2 by default).
- Button label and Button link add a solid button under the title.
- Background image fills the half behind the title. It is cropped to the box, which is half the screen wide and at least the full screen height.
- Image position puts this half on the Left (default) or the Right.
- Show image overlay adds a color layer over the image at 40 percent opacity, so the title stays readable. The layer uses the section's Background color.
- Background and Text under Custom colors replace the body colors from Colors theme settings for this section. Leave them transparent to keep the theme colors.
When the text half is longer than the screen, the image half stays in place while the customer scrolls the text, on screens wider than 1024 px. See How Split is built for this split-screen behaviour.
On phones and on tablets held upright the two halves stack: the title and image first, the text below.
For the image size that crops least, see Image size recommendations.
Blocks
The text half is built from blocks, in the order you arrange them. There is no limit on the number of blocks. A new section starts with a Heading and a Text block.
Heading
- Heading sets the text. Heading tag sets its HTML level (H3 by default).
Text
- Text is rich text: paragraphs, bold, italic, links and lists.
Button
- Button label and Button link add a solid button with an arrow.
Can I use the text blocks across the full width?
Yes. Leave Title, Button label and Background image empty. Split then hides the image half and the blocks take the full width of the page.
Can I show the content of a page?
No. Split 5.1.0 has no Page block in the Rich text section: it takes Heading, Text and Button blocks only. Copy the text into a Text block, or show the page with the Regular page template.
