Theme blocks

Theme blocks in Split: the ten blocks you add inside Flex cards and Flex grid cards, such as Heading, Text, Button and Image, with a page for each.

Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 5.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.

Theme blocks are the content blocks of the Flex sections: headings, text, buttons, small images and more. You add them inside the cards of the Flex cards and Flex grid sections, and each block has its own settings and page.

Where to find it: select Add block inside a Card (Flex cards section), a Text card (Flex grid section) or a Content group, in the theme editor.

Where you can use theme blocks

Split added theme blocks in 5.0.0, with the two Flex sections. They work in three places only:

ParentSectionAccepts
CardFlex cardsevery theme block, and app blocks
Text cardFlex gridevery theme block, and app blocks
Content groupinside a Card or a Text cardButton, Image and Caption
  • The Media card of the Flex grid section holds no blocks.
  • The other Split sections (Slideshow, Rich text, Testimonials and so on) have their own blocks, documented on each section's page. They do not accept theme blocks.

Split does not support theme blocks outside the Flex cards and Flex grid sections. Use a Flex section where you need them, or the blocks of the section you are editing.

The blocks

  • Heading block: a heading in four sizes, with a heading tag for SEO and [br] line breaks.
  • Text block: a paragraph of rich text with a text size and line height.
  • Caption block: a short label, with an optional background that makes it look like a badge.
  • Button block: a link button, outline or solid.
  • Image block: a small image or logo with a height in pixels and an optional link.
  • Divider block: a horizontal line in four widths and four styles.
  • Empty space block: extra vertical space between two blocks.
  • Star rating block: a row of five stars filled to the percentage you set, with a caption.
  • Content group block: puts Buttons, Images and Captions side by side in one row.
  • Custom Liquid block: your own Liquid or HTML code inside a card.

How the blocks are laid out in a card

  • Blocks stack one under the other, in the order of the theme editor sidebar. Drag them to reorder them.
  • Their alignment comes from the card: the section's Text alignment in Flex cards, the card's Text alignment in a Text card.
  • The gap under each block comes from the section's Text spacing, and the space around them from Text padding.
  • Blocks with nothing to show (an empty Heading, Text, Caption or Button label) are left out of the page.
