Video: popup section

Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.

The Video: popup section shows a full-width background image with a heading, a text and a play button. When a customer selects it, a YouTube or Vimeo video opens in a popup over the page and starts playing.

Where to find it: select Add section in the theme editor, then choose Video: popup.

Adding the videoCopy Anchor Link

• Video URL is the link to the video on YouTube or Vimeo. The editor accepts only links from these two sites.
• Split builds the player from the video ID that Shopify reads from the link, so a youtube.com/watch?v=… link and a short youtu.be/… link play the same video.
• The play button shows only when Video URL is set. The heading, the text and the play button together open the popup.
• The popup shows the video in a 16:9 frame, at most 90 percent of the screen height. Customers close it with the close icon.

Background image and colorsCopy Anchor Link

• Background image fills the section behind the text and is cropped to fit. The section is at least 65 percent of the screen height. A landscape image of 1920 x 1080 px works well.
• Text under Custom colors sets the color of the heading, the text and the play button.
• Image overlay lays a color over the background image at 40 percent opacity, so the text stays readable.
• Leave the custom colors transparent to keep the colors from Colors theme settings.

Each block can be added once. The preset starts with a Text and a Heading.

• Heading is the title text.
• Heading tag (under SEO) sets the HTML tag for search engines, span by default. It does not change the size.

• Text is a short line of plain text, without formatting.

Can I show only the play button?Copy Anchor Link

Yes. Remove the Heading and Text blocks. The background image and the play button stay, and selecting the play button opens the video.

Can I use a video from my Shopify files?Copy Anchor Link

No. The Video: popup section plays only YouTube and Vimeo videos. For an MP4 from Shopify admin → Content → Files, use the Video: background section, which plays it muted behind your text.
