Promotional banner section
The Promotional banner section shows a small promotion box over Split pages, with per-product title, subtitle and link from product metafields.
Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 3.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.
The Promotional banner section shows a small box at the bottom right of the screen a few seconds after the page loads, for a flash sale or a new product. It has a title, a subtitle and a link, and on product pages each product can have its own promotion.
Where to find it: Overlay group → Add section → Promotional banner
Adding the promotional banner
The Promotional banner can be added only to the Overlay group. You can add several, for example one for the home page and one for product pages.
- Show banner turns the banner on. It is off when you add the section.
- Visibility chooses the pages: All pages, Homepage only, Product pages only, Cart page only, or All pages except the homepage.
- Show popup after sets how many seconds after the page loads the banner appears, from 3 to 60 (default 6).
- Title, Subtitle and Link are the content. With a link, the whole box is clickable.
- Background color and Text color set the box. The close icon uses the text color.
The box is up to 375 px wide; on phones it spans the screen width at the bottom. When the Cookies banner or another promotional banner is open at the same time, the boxes stack one above the other.
After a customer closes the banner with the close icon or the Esc key, it stays hidden in that browser for 24 hours. It shows again sooner when its title or subtitle changes.
How do I link the banner to a product or collection card?
Pick a product or a collection in Link. The banner then turns into a "smart object":
- A product link shows a small product card with the product image, title and price under your title and subtitle.
- A collection link shows the collection's image behind your title and subtitle.
- Any other link, such as a page or an external URL, makes the box a plain link.
Setting up per-product promotions
On product pages, the banner can show a different title, subtitle and link for each product. The values come from three product metafields. Products with empty metafields show the section's own Title, Subtitle and Link.
Create the title metafield
In Shopify admin, open Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Products and select Add definition. Name it, for example "Promo title", set the namespace and key to promo_banner.title and choose the type Single line text. Save.
Create the subtitle and link metafields
Add two more definitions the same way, both Single line text: promo_banner.subtitle and promo_banner.link.
Fill the metafields on a product
Open a product in Shopify admin → Products. In the Metafields area, fill in the promo title, subtitle and link for this product. For a product or collection card, write the link as a relative URL: /products/your-product-handle or /collections/your-collection-handle.
Add and turn on the banner
In the theme editor, open the Overlay group, select Add section → Promotional banner and turn on Show banner. Set Visibility to Product pages only if the banner is only for these promotions.
Check a product page
Save and open the product on your store. After Show popup after seconds, the banner shows the product's own texts.
Each metafield replaces only its matching setting. A product with only a promo title keeps the section's Subtitle and Link. If the section's Title, Subtitle and Link are all empty, the banner shows only on products that have their own values.
Write product links in the metafield exactly as /products/your-product-handle. Split reads the handle by removing "products" and the slashes, so a longer URL such as /collections/shirts/products/linen-shirt becomes a plain link, not a product card. A collection whose handle contains the word "product" is also read as a product link.
Video: setting up per-product promotions
This part of the Split setup video, from 23:10, creates the three promo_banner metafields, fills them on a product and shows the banner on the product page. The video was recorded on an older Split version: the banner is now added from the Overlay group, and the Shopify admin screens look different.
Why does my promotional banner not show?
Usually because it is off, limited to other pages or already closed. Check these in order:
- Show banner is on.
- Visibility includes the page you are on.
- The banner has content: a Title, a Subtitle or a Link, in the section or in the product's metafields. With none of the three, nothing shows.
- You did not close it in the last 24 hours. Open the store in a private window to test.
In the theme editor, the banner opens when you select the section, even with Show banner off.
