Overlay group

Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 4.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.

The Overlay group holds the sections that open on top of the page instead of inside it: a newsletter popup, the cookie consent banner and small promotion boxes. Like the header and footer groups, it is shared by every page of your store.

Where to find it: Overlay group, at the bottom of the theme editor sidebar, on any template.

What the Overlay group containsCopy Anchor Link

A new Split install has two sections in the Overlay group:

• Popup: a newsletter or announcement window in the middle of the screen, shown after a delay. It is installed with Enable popup off. See Popup section.
• Cookies: Split's cookie consent banner with accept and decline buttons. It is installed hidden. See Cookies banner.

One more section is made for this group:

• Promotional banner: a small box with a title, a subtitle and a link, or a product or collection card. Select Add section → Promotional banner in the Overlay group; it cannot be added anywhere else. You can add several, for example one per page type. See Promotional banner section.

• The Popup covers the page with a dark layer and shows its window in the center of the screen. On phones and on tablets held upright it sits at the bottom of the screen.
• The Cookies banner and the Promotional banners are small boxes at the bottom right of the screen, up to 375 px wide. When several are open at once, they stack one above the other.
• Each overlay remembers in the customer's browser that it was closed. How long it stays hidden depends on the section: see each section's page.

How do I edit an overlay in the theme editor?Copy Anchor Link

Select the section in the Overlay group in the sidebar. The editor preview opens it at once, even when the section is turned off or its delay has not passed, so you can see your changes. Select another section and the overlay closes.

In the editor, closing an overlay is not remembered, so it shows again every time you select it. On your live store, customers see it only according to its own delay and frequency settings.

Why does my overlay not show on the live store?Copy Anchor Link

Usually because it is turned off, or because your browser already closed it. Check these in order:

• The Popup needs Enable popup on, and the Promotional banner needs Show banner on. The Cookies section must not be hidden with the eye icon.
• The Popup waits for Show popup after seconds, and the Promotional banner too.
• The Promotional banner has a Visibility setting that limits it to some pages.
• After you close an overlay once, your browser keeps it hidden for a while. Open the store in a private window to see it again.
