Popup section
The Popup section opens a newsletter or announcement popup in Split after a delay you set, with an image, and shows it again each day, week or month.
Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.
The Popup section opens a window in the middle of the screen a few seconds after a customer arrives, with a heading, a short text, an optional newsletter form and an image. It is installed turned off.
Where to find it: Overlay group → Popup
How the popup looks
- On screens wider than 700 px, the image fills the left half of the window and the text sits on the right. The window is up to 960 x 600 px, over a dark layer that covers the page.
- Without an image, or without any text, the window is half as wide.
- On phones and on tablets held upright, the window sits at the bottom of the screen. On screens 700 px and narrower the image is hidden, unless Show image on mobile is on: then it shows above the text.
- Customers close the popup with the close icon or the Esc key, or by clicking the dark layer around it. A linked image opens Image link in the same tab.
Setting up the popup
Turn the popup on
Open Overlay group → Popup → Functionality and turn on Enable popup.
Write the content
Fill in Heading and Content. Leave Show email sign up form on to collect newsletter subscribers, or turn it off for an announcement without a form.
Add an image
Under Image, upload an Image: 960 x 1200 px JPG is recommended. Add an Image link if the image should open a page, and turn on Show image on mobile to keep it on phones.
Set the delay and the frequency
Set Show popup after to the number of seconds before the popup opens (3 to 60, default 10). In Popup frequency, choose how often a customer who closed it sees it again.
Set the colors and save
Under Colors, set Background color and Text color. Save, then check the popup on your store in a private browser window.
How often customers see the popup
When a customer closes the popup, Split stores that in their browser. Popup frequency sets how long it then stays hidden:
- Show each day: the popup opens again after 24 hours.
- Show each week (default): it opens again after 7 days.
- Show each month: the popup does not show again to a customer who closed it, until you change its heading or content text.
The popup is remembered per browser and per device. A customer who switches to another device or browser sees it again. Changing the popup's heading or content shows it again to everyone, which is useful for a new campaign.
A customer who signs up without closing the popup has not closed it, so it can open again on a later page view.
Where do the email addresses go?
To your Shopify customer list. The form creates a customer with the tag newsletter who accepts email marketing. Find the subscribers in Shopify admin → Customers, and send campaigns with Shopify Email or an email app that reads your Shopify customers. The success message after signing up is a theme text you can change in Edit default theme content.
Why is my popup not showing?
Usually because it is off or because your browser already closed it. Check these in order:
- Enable popup is on. The section installs with it off.
- Show popup after has passed: the popup waits that many seconds after the page loads.
- Your browser has not closed it recently. Open the store in a private window, or change the popup text.
- Popup frequency is not Show each month, if you closed the popup before.
In the theme editor the popup opens as soon as you select the Popup section, even with Enable popup off, and closing it there is not remembered. That preview does not mean it is on for customers.
