Cookies banner

The Cookies section shows Split's cookie consent banner with accept and decline buttons, only to customers who must give consent under Shopify privacy settings.

Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 4.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.

The Cookies section is Split's cookie consent banner: a small box at the bottom right of the screen with the buttons Accept all cookies and Decline all cookies. It passes the customer's choice to Shopify, which then allows or blocks tracking. It is installed hidden.

How the banner works

  • The banner uses Shopify's Customer Privacy API. Accept all cookies allows analytics, marketing and preferences cookies; Decline all cookies refuses all three.
  • The choice is saved in the customer's browser, and the banner does not show again in that browser.
  • The texts are theme texts: the title "Cookies", the message "This website uses cookies to ensure you get the best experience on your device." and the two button labels. Change them in Online Store → Themes → … → Edit default theme content (search for "cookies").
  • Which cookies a store sets and what consent the law requires are decided in Shopify, not by Split. See Cookie consent popup.

When the banner shows

The editor note on the section says: "The cookies popover will only be visible if it customer data is set to be collected after consent." That setting is in Shopify admin → Settings → Customer privacy.

Setting up the cookies banner

In Shopify admin, open Settings → Customer privacy. Set where data is collected only after consent. If you use Split's banner, turn off Shopify's own cookie banner there, so customers see only one.

Show the Cookies section

In the theme editor, open the Overlay group. Point to Cookies and select the eye icon to show the section.

Set the colors

Select Cookies and set Background color and Text color. The buttons use the text color, so they always match the box.

Check it on your store

Save, then open your store in a private browser window. The banner appears at the bottom right. Select one of the buttons and reload: the banner stays hidden.

Use one cookie banner only. If Shopify's cookie banner or a consent app is also on, customers see two banners and may answer one but not the other. Keep Split's banner or the other one, not both.

Colors

  • Background color sets the box (default light grey).
  • Text color sets the text and the buttons: the Accept all cookies button is filled with the text color, and Decline all cookies is outlined in it.

Why does the cookies banner not show?

Usually because the section is hidden or because your browser already answered. Check these in order:

  • The Cookies section is visible in the Overlay group. It is installed hidden: select the eye icon next to it.
  • Your browser has not accepted or declined yet. The answer is saved for good in that browser: open the store in a private window to test again.
  • Your consent setup in Shopify admin → Settings → Customer privacy. See Cookie consent popup.

Only if you need more than accept or decline all. Split's banner has no per-category choices, no cookie list and no record of consent. For GDPR, CCPA or Google Consent Mode needs beyond that, use a consent app and hide the Cookies section. See Cookie banner apps for GDPR compliance.

Popup

The Popup section opens a newsletter or announcement popup in Split after a delay you set, with an image, and shows it again each day, week or month.

Promotional banner

The Promotional banner section shows a small promotion box over Split pages, with per-product title, subtitle and link from product metafields.
