Header group

The Header group of Split holds the Announcement bar, the Header and the Breadcrumb sections that appear at the top of every page.

Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 4.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.

The Header group is the stack of sections at the top of every page of your store. You edit it once and it shows on every template.

Where to find it: open the theme editor (Online Store → Themes → Customize). The Header group is the first group in the sidebar, on any template.

What the Header group contains

A new Split install has three sections in the Header group, in this order:

Drag the sections in the sidebar to change their order. To hide one, point to it and select the eye icon.

How the Header group affects the page height

Split sizes many sections to the screen: a "full height" slide or half fills the screen. Split measures that height as the browser window minus the height of the whole Header group. A taller announcement bar or a breadcrumb row therefore makes full-height sections a little shorter, so the first section still fits exactly below the header. See How Split is built.

Only the Header section can stick to the top of the screen while the customer scrolls. The announcement bar and the breadcrumb scroll away with the page.

Can I add other sections above the header?

Yes, a few. The Header group accepts these sections from Add section:

  • Announcement bar (you can add several).
  • Scrolling text, for a moving promotion line.
  • Custom HTML / Liquid and Apps, for code snippets and app blocks.

Content sections such as Slideshow, Rich text or Featured collection cannot be added to the Header group. Add them to the page template instead.
