Header menus
Header menus in Split: the main menu, the collections menu with collection images, and the promotion block in the header or menu drawer.
Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.
Split's header can show two menus: the main menu and an optional collections menu, which opens a large panel with your collections and their images. A promotion block can sit next to the collections in that panel, or at the bottom of the menu drawer.
Where to find it: Header group → Header → Collections menu
The main menu
The main menu is the Shopify menu chosen in the Header section's Menu setting (default: Main menu). You build it in Shopify admin → Content → Menus, which is a Shopify feature: see Shopify's Menus help page. How the menu opens on desktop (in the header or in the menu drawer) is set by Desktop menu style on the Header section.
The collections menu
The collections menu adds one extra item in front of the main menu links. The item has the name of the Shopify menu you pick (for example "Shop") and links to your all collections page.
- With Desktop menu style set to Classic, the item opens a large panel under the header. Each first-level link of the menu is a column with its title, its collection image and its child links in a small list.
- With the Drawer style, and on phones and tablets, the collections menu is an item in the menu drawer that opens a list of its links. The menu drawer does not show collection images.
Setting up the collections menu
Create the menu in Shopify
In Shopify admin, open Content → Menus and select Add menu. Give it the name you want customers to see in the header, for example "Shop".
Add your collections as first-level links
Add one menu item per collection, for example Men, Women and Kids, each linking to its collection. Under each one you can add child links, for example to smaller collections. Save the menu.
Pick the menu in the header
In the theme editor, open Header group → Header → Collections menu and select the menu in Menu.
Choose whether to show collection images
Leave Show collection images on to show the image of each collection in its column. The image comes from the collection's own image in Shopify admin → Products → Collections. Save.
The collections menu shows only one level of child links. Links that you nest deeper under a child link do not appear.
Setting up the promotion block
The promotion block is a small box with a title, a short text, a button and an optional image, for a sale or a featured page.
Turn on the promotion block
Open Header group → Header → Promotion block and turn on Show promotion block.
Write the promotion
Fill in Promotion title, Promotion content, Promotion button label and Promotion button link. The button shows only when it has a label.
Add an image and colors
Upload a Promotion image if you want one. Set Promotion text color and Promotion background color. Without an image, the background color fills the box. With an image, the background color is a light tint over the image.
Check where it shows
With Desktop menu style set to Classic, the box is a column in the collections menu panel, so a collections menu must be set. In the menu drawer, used by the Drawer style and on phones and tablets, the box sits at the bottom of the drawer.
The button uses Promotion text color as its background, with black or white text chosen automatically for contrast.
Why does my collections menu not show submenus?
Because the collections menu supports only one level of submenus. Each first-level link shows its own child links, but links nested under those child links are not shown. Move deeper links up one level, or put them in the main menu, which supports three levels.
Why does a collection in my collections menu have no image?
Usually because the menu item's title does not match the collection handle. Check these three things:
- Show collection images is on.
- The collection has an image in Shopify admin → Products → Collections.
- The menu item's title matches the collection handle. Split finds the collection from the menu item's title turned into a handle ("Summer Sale" becomes
summer-sale), not from the link. The handle is the last part of the collection's URL, for example/collections/summer-sale. Give the menu item a title that turns into that handle.
All Header menus settings
Every setting in this group, with its type and default.
Header section: Collections menu
Where to find it: Header group → Header → Collections menu
This menu only supports one level of submenus.
Menu (menu picker): The Shopify menu shown as the collections menu: one extra item, named after the menu, in front of the main menu. With the Classic style it opens a panel with one column per first-level link.
Show collection images (checkbox, default: on): Shows the collection image above each first-level link of the collections menu, in the Classic style only. The collection is found from the link title turned into a handle, so the title must match the collection handle.
Header section: Promotion block
Where to find it: Header group → Header → Promotion block
Show promotion block (checkbox, default: off): Shows the promotion box at the bottom of the menu drawer, and with the Classic style as a column in the collections menu panel (only when a collections menu is set).
Promotion title (text field).
Promotion content (rich text).
Promotion button label (text field): The button text. The button shows only when this has a text.
Promotion button link (link).
Promotion text color (color, default: #000000): Sets the title, text and the button background of the promotion box. The button text turns black or white for contrast.
Promotion background color (color, default: #f3f3f3): Fills the promotion box. With a Promotion image, it is a light tint over the image instead.
Promotion image (image).

The Header section sets the Split logo, the main menu style (classic or drawer), the sticky header, language and country selectors and the account menu.
Breadcrumb
The Breadcrumb section shows the path to the current page under the Split header. It has no settings; one theme setting adds collection names.
