Use dynamic sources for unique product pages
Give products their own content with product templates, metafields and dynamic sources, so not every product page shows the same sections and text.
Applies to: All Krown themes. Last checked: 2026-10-13.
By default every product uses the Default product template, so every product page shows the same sections and texts. Two Shopify tools change that: a second product template gives a group of products other sections, and dynamic sources let one template show each product's own content from a metafield.
Where to find it: the template selector and the Connect dynamic source icon in the theme editor; the metafields in Shopify admin → Settings → Metafields and metaobjects
The video covers three topics:
- Assigning a different template to a group of products.
- Writing unique content for each product page with dynamic sources.
- Creating and using different metafield types.
It was recorded in the 2024 admin; the steps below follow the current one.
Give a product its own template
Use a second template when a group of products needs other sections, for example a size guide only on clothing.
Create the template
In the theme editor, open the template selector at the top, select Products and then Create template. Name it and choose Default product as the template to copy from.
Change the new template
Add, remove or change the sections and blocks of the new template, then select Save.
Assign it to products
Open Shopify admin → Products, open a product and choose the new template under Theme template. Select Save. Repeat for each product, or set the Template column in Shopify's bulk editor.
Shopify lists only the templates of your published theme in the Theme template field.
Show unique content with metafields and dynamic sources
Use a metafield when every product needs its own text, image or list in the same place, for example care instructions.
Create the metafield definition
Open Shopify admin → Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Products and select Add definition. Give it a name, choose a type and Save.
Fill it on each product
Open Shopify admin → Products, open a product, enter the value under Metafields and Save.
Connect it to a block
In the theme editor, select the block and find a setting that accepts dynamic content. Select the Connect dynamic source icon next to the setting and choose your metafield.
Save and compare
Select Save, then open two products on your storefront. Each shows its own value in the same block.
Which metafield type should I choose?
The one that fits the setting you connect it to:
- A text setting takes a text metafield (single line or multi-line text).
- A rich text setting takes a rich text metafield.
- An image setting takes a file metafield.
- A product list setting takes a product list metafield.
The theme editor only offers metafields whose type fits the setting.
Why do all my product pages look the same?
Because they all use the Default product template and the block texts are typed into the template. Text typed in the theme editor is the same for every product with that template. Connect the setting to a metafield instead, or give some products their own template.
Why is a block empty on some products?
The product's metafield is empty. A block connected to a metafield shows nothing, or hides, when the product has no value. Fill the metafield on that product, or fill many at once with Shopify's bulk editor.
