Show variant metafields on the product page
Show details that change with the selected variant, such as measurements or materials, with a variant metafield and the Variant metafield block.
Applies to: All Krown themes. Last checked: 2026-10-13.
A variant metafield holds one value per variant, for example the sleeve length of each size. The Variant metafield block shows that value on the product page and changes it when the customer selects another variant.
Where to find it: Products → Default product → the product page section → Add block → Variant metafield
This article is for the themes: Seventh, Borders, Local & Combine.
Which themes have the Variant metafield block?
Four of the seven Krown themes have it, in these sections:
- Seventh: the Product information block of the Product page section. See Complementary products, coupon code, disclosures and variant metafield blocks.
- Local: the Product page section and the Quick view section.
- Combine: the Product page, Featured product and Quick view sections.
- Borders: the Product page and Featured product sections.
Highlight, Kingdom and Split do not have the Variant metafield block. Show product-level details with dynamic sources instead, see Use dynamic sources for unique product pages.
What can I show with a variant metafield?
Anything that differs from one variant to the next, without creating separate products:
- Measurements per size, such as sleeve length or chest width.
- Material details that change with the color or finish.
- Compatibility information.
- Internal identifiers, such as a supplier code.
- Shipping details that differ between variants.
The block has two settings:
- Variant metafield key takes the metafield in the form
namespace.key, for examplecustom.variant_info. - Title is an optional label shown above the value. It shows only when the selected variant has a value.
Any metafield type works: the block prints the value the way Shopify formats it (text, rich text, a number with its unit, a link). Single line text is the simplest.
Set up a variant metafield
Create the definition
Open Shopify admin → Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Variants and select Add definition. Give it a name, for example "Variant info".
Choose the type and save
Select a type (single line text is the simplest) and Save. Shopify sets the namespace and key from the name, for example custom.variant_info.
Fill in the variants
Open Shopify admin → Products, open a product and select a variant. Type its value in the new field under Metafields and Save. Repeat for every variant that needs a value.
Add the block
In the theme editor, open the product template, select the product page section and select Add block → Variant metafield.
Paste the key
Paste custom.variant_info (your namespace and key) into Variant metafield key, add a Title if you want one, and Save.
Test it
Open the product on your storefront and select the variants one by one. The text changes with each variant.
Why does the block not show anything?
The selected variant has no value in that metafield, or the key is wrong. A variant with an empty metafield shows nothing, not even the title. Check that Variant metafield key is written as namespace.key with a dot and no spaces, exactly as in Shopify admin → Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Variants.
Can I show more than one variant metafield?
Yes. One block shows one metafield. Add a second Variant metafield block with the other key, for example one for the material and one for the measurements.
