General section settings

Settings many Kingdom sections share: inner content spacing, custom text and background colors, and the heading tag for search engines.

Applies to: Kingdom 6.2.0 and later. Added in: Kingdom 2.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Kingdom 6.2.0.

Many Kingdom sections share the same three kinds of settings: Enable inner content spacing, custom colors and Heading tag. This page explains them once; each section page lists which of them it has.

Where to find it: select a section in the theme editor. The shared settings sit under the Gutter, Colors and SEO headers of the section's panel.

Inner content spacing

Enable inner content spacing sits under the Gutter header of image and media sections, such as Image, Gallery, Collection list, Slideshow: horizontal and the video sections.

  • On: the section gets side padding and a space below it, so it lines up with the text sections around it.
  • Off: the section runs edge to edge, from the sidebar to the right side of the screen, and touches the next section.
  • The side padding is Theme settings → Layout → Horizontal padding (default 90 px). On screens 948 px wide or less, the side padding is always 25 px.
  • The space between sections is Theme settings → Layout → Vertical spacing (default 100 px). It shrinks on smaller screens, down to half the value on phones.

The default differs per section: Apps and Custom HTML / Liquid have it on, most image sections have it off. See Layout theme settings for the values themselves.

Custom colors

Sections with text have Custom text color and Custom background color under the Colors header. The video sections, Shop the look, the collection banner and each slide of the slideshows have Custom text color and Background overlay instead.

  • Every custom color is transparent by default. A transparent color means "use the theme colors" from Theme settings → Colors → Body.
  • Custom text color replaces the body text color in that section only.
  • Custom background color on a text section, such as Rich text, Text columns or Email signup, fills the whole section with that color and adds extra space above and below the content. Two colored sections in a row touch each other without a gap.
  • Custom background color on Collection list and Image with text is a tint laid over the images. Lower the color's opacity to keep the image visible.
  • Background overlay is a color laid over the image or video, so the text on top stays readable. Use a dark color with partial opacity, for example black at 30 percent.

To go back to the theme colors, set the color's opacity back to 0.

Heading tag

Heading tag sits under the SEO header. It sets the HTML tag of the section's heading: H1, H2, H3, H4 or span. The default is H2 or H3, depending on the section.

  • The tag tells search engines how the page is structured. It does not change how big the heading looks.
  • Use H1 only once per page. The page title of a product, collection or blog post is already an H1.
  • Choose span for a heading that should not count as a heading at all, for example a decorative line of text.

Why is my section's custom color not applied?

Because the color is still transparent. Every custom color starts at opacity 0, and picking a new shade can keep that opacity. Open the color and raise its opacity to 100 percent. A color with opacity 0 always falls back to the theme colors.

Why is there no space between two of my sections?

Because one of them has Enable inner content spacing off, or both have a Custom background color. Sections without inner content spacing sit directly against their neighbours, and so do colored text sections. Turn on Enable inner content spacing on the image section to bring the space back.

Does Heading tag change the font size?

No. Heading tag only changes the HTML tag. The font and its base size come from Theme settings → Typography → Headings, and some sections and blocks have their own size setting.
