Video: popup section

The Video: popup section shows an image with a play button in Kingdom that plays a YouTube or Vimeo video in its place when selected.

Applies to: Kingdom 6.2.0 and later. Added in: Kingdom 2.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Kingdom 6.2.0.

The Video: popup section shows an image with a large play button and an optional heading and text. When a customer selects it, a YouTube or Vimeo video loads in place of the image and starts playing.

Where to find it: select Add section in the theme editor, then choose Video: popup (Add section category Media & galleries).

Add the section

In the theme editor, select Add section and choose Video: popup.

Open the video on YouTube or Vimeo, copy the link from the browser's address bar, for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcJtL7QggTI, and paste it into Video URL. Shopify accepts only YouTube and Vimeo links in this field.

Choose the cover image

Upload a Background image. It shows under the play button until the video starts, in a 16:9 frame, cropped around its focal point.

Test it

Select Save, open the page in the storefront and select the play button. The video replaces the image and plays with sound, inside the same frame.

Use the video's complete link in this format: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcJtL7QggTI. If a share link (https://youtu.be/…) or a link with extra parameters does not load, replace it with the complete link.

Image and text

  • The section has two blocks, each used once: Heading (with Heading size Regular, Large or Extra large, and a Heading tag) and Text. The Text block also shows a Heading size setting, but in Kingdom 6.2.0 it does not change the text.
  • The heading and text sit on the image, next to the play button. The whole image, text included, starts the video.
  • Custom text color sets the color of the text and the play button. Background overlay lays a color over the image at 36 percent opacity, so light text stays readable.
  • Enable inner content spacing (default off) adds side padding around the section. See General section settings.

Why does my video not load?

Because the link is not one Shopify can read, or the video does not allow embedding. Check these in order:

  1. Video URL holds the complete link from the address bar, such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=… or https://vimeo.com/….
  2. The video is public or unlisted on YouTube, and embedding is allowed in its YouTube or Vimeo settings. Private videos never play on other sites.
  3. A browser extension or a cookie banner does not block YouTube or Vimeo on your store.

Can I use a video uploaded to Shopify?

No. The Video: popup section plays only YouTube and Vimeo links. For a video file uploaded to Shopify, use the Video: background section, which plays it muted in a loop.
