Troubleshoot product and collection pages

Troubleshoot Local product and collection pages: metafield blocks that show nothing, missing swatches, badges, ratings and icons.

Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.

Answers to the most common problems on Local product pages, product cards and collection pages. Each answer names the setting to check and links to the page that documents it.

Why does my metafield block show nothing?

Usually because the metafield is connected with the dynamic source button where Local expects it typed, or the product has no value.

  • Nutriscore, Attribute meter, Progress dots chart and Progress bar chart read a metafield whose name you type as text, for example custom.roast_level. A connected source puts the value in the field instead of the name, and the block falls back to its slider value.
  • The Variant metafield block and the Metaobject swatch metafields setting also need the name typed as namespace.key.
  • Collapsible tab, Nutritional information, Products list and Product siblings are the opposite: connect them with the Connect dynamic source icon.
  • Check that the product, or the selected variant, has a value in the metafield in Shopify admin.

See Product attribute blocks and More product blocks.

Why does the same collapsible tab show on every product?

Because its content is typed in the block, or a page is selected in Tab content from page. Typed content and pages are the same on every product of the template. Connect Tab content to a product metafield and turn on Hide block if dynamic content is not present, so products without a value show no tab. See Product content blocks.

Why does my variant option show no swatch?

Because Local found no swatch for that option value. Shopify swatches come from category metafields; your own swatches need a metaobject list metafield typed in the Variant picker's Metaobject swatch metafields. Check that Variants selector type is Blocks, that the entry's Label matches the option value exactly, and that the setting is filled in every template that shows the product (Product page, Featured product, Quick view). See Variant swatches.

Why do product siblings show the same products on every product?

Because the products are picked by hand in the Product siblings block. A hand-picked list is the same on every product of the template. Create a product list metafield, fill it on each product, and connect the block's Products setting to it. See Product variant and buy blocks.

Why do the product ratings not show?

Because the theme does not know your reviews app, or the products have no reviews. Select the app in Theme settings → Product card → Product rating → Rating app. Product cards also need the Rating block in the product grid, and the product page needs the Product rating block. Apps that are not in the list can use their own app blocks. See Product card theme settings.

Why does my discount badge say "On Sale" instead of a percentage?

Because the product's variants have different prices or compare-at prices. Product cards then show "On Sale", whatever Show discount as... says. On the product page, the Product badges block shows the saving of the selected variant. A discount badge also needs a compare-at price higher than the price. See Product badges theme settings.

Why does my custom badge not show?

Because the product does not have the exact tag. A custom badge shows when the product's tags contain the badge's Tag, letter for letter, including capitals. Check the tag in Shopify admin → Products, and that Show badges is on in Theme settings → Product card. See Product badges theme settings.

Why do my icons not show on product cards?

Because the Icons list block is missing from the grid, or the metafields are not set up.

  • The icons come from the metafields named in Theme settings → Product card → Dynamic icons list, typed as namespace.key.
  • The icon metafield must be a File metafield with an image.
  • Without an icon metafield, Local looks for a PNG in Shopify admin → Content → Files named like the label (gluten-free.png for "Gluten free").
  • Each product grid section needs the Icons list block.

See Dynamic icons list theme settings.

Why does Local availability say "Out of stock at" my store?

Because the store has no stock of that variant for pickup, or Local cannot match the store to a Shopify location. The Store block's Name must be the Shopify location name, word for word, and the location must have local pickup turned on. Product cards show the stock of the first available variant. See Store selector section and Troubleshoot the store selector and maps.

Why does the add to cart button say "Choose a variant first"?

Because Select the first available variant by default is off, so no variant is selected when the page opens. Customers must select every option first. Turn the setting on in Products → Default product → Product page → Functionality. See Product page.

Why does Quick buy add the product without opening the popup?

Because the product has only one variant. Quick buy adds it straight to the cart. To open the Quick view popup for every product, turn on Always open quick buy modal in Theme settings → Product card → Buy buttons. See Quick view popup.

Why is my block missing in the Quick view popup?

Because the popup is a separate template with its own blocks. Open the template picker, select Products → quick-view and add the block there, with the same settings as on the product page. See Quick view popup.

Why do the "Pre-Order" labels show on all my products?

Because Show "pre-order" button label is on in the Buy buttons block of a template that all products use. The label applies to every available variant of every product on that template. Create a separate template for pre-order products and turn the setting on there only. See Product variant and buy blocks.

How do I show color swatches in the collection filters?

With Shopify's Search & Discovery app, not with a theme setting. In the app, set the filter's presentation to swatches or images; Local then shows the swatch color or image Shopify sends for each value. Shopify controls which filters exist and how their values look. See Shopify's guide to filters.

Why is there no compare option on product cards?

Because comparing is off by default. Turn on Enable comparing in Collections → Default collection → Product grid → Filtering and sorting. Customers then select up to 4 products and open the comparison page. See Product comparison page.
