Troubleshoot the store selector and maps

Troubleshoot the Local store selector, pickup availability and Google maps: why a store, its availability or the map does not show.

Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.

Use this page when the store selector, the pickup availability lines or a Google map do not behave as expected. Each answer names the setting to check. The setup itself is on Store selector section and Maps theme settings.

Why does every product say "Out of stock" at my store?

Because Local cannot match the Store block with a Shopify location that offers local pickup. Check, in order:

  1. The Store block's Name has the same words as the location name in Shopify admin → Settings → Locations. Capitals, spaces and punctuation may differ; words may not.
  2. The location offers local pickup: Shopify admin → Settings → Shipping and delivery → Local pickup → the location → This location offers local pickup.
  3. The product has stock at that location. On product cards, Local checks the product's first available variant.

Why does "Choose a store to see local availability" do nothing?

Because the Store selector section has no Store blocks, so there is no popup to open. Open Store selector in the theme editor sidebar and add one Store block per store. The Compact pickup lines need the store selector; the Extended style of the Pickup availability block does not.

Why is the map grey or missing?

Because Google refuses to load it, or the map is turned off. Check:

  1. Theme settings → Maps → Google Maps API key is filled.
  2. In Google Cloud, the key's project has the Maps JavaScript API enabled and a billing account.
  3. The key's website restrictions include the domain you are looking at, including your myshopify.com address.
  4. Enable dynamic map is on in the Store selector or the Stores map section.

The map also loads only when it scrolls into view, or 10 seconds after the page opens.

Why are some stores missing from the map?

Because they have no coordinates, or the zoom is too close. A store needs both Latitude and Longitude to get a pin. Local first fits all pins, then applies Map zoom around their center: lower the zoom (the default is 16) until every pin shows. Also check that you replaced the example coordinates that new Store blocks start with, or several stores share one pin.

Why does a store have no Get directions button?

Because the button needs both Latitude and Longitude, and, in the Store selector, a filled Store details text. Fill all three. The button opens Google Maps at the coordinates, or your Custom link when you set one.

Why does the store image not show in the store selector?

Because in Local 4.2.1 the Store image of a Store block shows only while Enable dynamic map is on in the Store selector section. Turn on the map, or describe the store in Store details instead.

Why does the header show the wrong closing time?

Because the Closing times (optional) lines are not in the order Local expects. Write exactly seven lines, Sunday first, and press Enter (not Shift + Enter) between them. Local picks the line for the customer's own weekday, from their device's date.

Why does the pickup time differ between the store selector and the product page?

Because they come from two places. The store selector list shows the Pickup time text of the Store block. The Extended Pickup availability block on the product page shows Shopify's pickup time, set on the location in Settings → Shipping and delivery → Local pickup. Make both say the same.

Why did my customers' chosen store reset?

Because the choice lives in the customer's browser, per device, and is linked to the Store block name. A customer on another device or browser has to choose again. Renaming a Store block also clears the match, so customers who chose that store see "Select store" again.

Why can customers still buy a product that is not available at their store?

Because the store selector and the pickup lines are information only. Customers choose pickup or delivery, and the pickup location, at Shopify checkout, and Shopify handles the stock from there. Local does not block purchases by store. A developer can hide the buy buttons with code, see Hide purchase buttons when local pickup is not available; checkout still allows the purchase.

Does the Stores map section change the customer's store?

No. The Stores map section only presents your stores; it is not connected to the store selector or to Shopify locations. See Stores map section.
