Troubleshoot the header, menus and popups
Troubleshoot the Local header, mega menus and popups: menus that do not turn into mega menus, missing images, popups that do not show.
Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.
Use this page when the header, a mega menu or a popup does not behave as expected. Each answer names the setting to check. The full settings are on Header section, Header menus and mega menus and Popups section.
Why does my menu not turn into a mega menu?
Because the Mega menu block's Menu handle does not match a top-level item of the header menu. Check:
- The handle is the item's title in lowercase, with hyphens instead of spaces: "Our Promotions" is
our-promotions. The handle is case sensitive. - The item belongs to the menu chosen in Header → Menu, and it is a top-level item, not a link inside a dropdown.
- The item has links below it in Shopify admin → Online Store → Navigation.
- The item was not renamed after you typed the handle. A new title gives a new handle.
Why do my mega menu images not show?
Because Local cannot find a file with the right name. With Show menu images on, each column looks for <handle>.jpg, then <handle>.webp, in Shopify admin → Content → Files, where the handle is that of the column's second-level link ("Gift Boxes" → gift-boxes.jpg). PNG files are not used. On mobile, a column's image shows only when that link has links below it, at the bottom of its submenu.
Why are the info blocks missing on my phone?
Because Header → Header info blocks → Choose an option decides it, and the theme ships with Show only on homepage. Set it to Show always to show the store selector and info blocks in the header on every page on mobile. Inside the mobile navigation drawer, they show when Show store selector & info blocks is on.
Why does the transparent header not work on a page?
Because the page is not one of the pages you turned on, or it has no image to sit over. The home page needs Enable on homepage and a slideshow or full-width image as the first section. A collection page needs Enable on collection pages and a collection image. Other pages need their handle in Enable on custom pages.
Why do my popups all appear at once?
Because their Show popup after delays are too close. Give each popup a very different delay, use Enable scroll based trigger on one of them, or limit them to different pages with Visibility. See "Showing several popups" on Popups section.
Why does my popup not show again?
Because the customer closed it, and Local remembers that in their browser until the Popup frequency period ends (a day, a week). In Local 4.2.1, Show each month shows the popup only once per browser. To test as a new customer, open the store in a private browser window.
Why does my popup not show at all?
Usually because it is off, set for other pages, or was closed before in this browser. Check, in order:
- Enable popup is on, and you selected Save.
- Visibility includes the page you are testing.
- You waited for Show popup after, and scrolled past Scroll position if the scroll trigger is on.
- You did not close it before in this browser. Use a private window.
- You are not in the theme editor, where popups open only when you select their block.
Why does the exit intent popup not show?
Because it works only with a mouse, on desktop. It opens when the mouse moves up to the top edge of the window, once per page view, and never in the theme editor or on phones and tablets. See Exit intent popup section.
Why do I see two cookie banners?
Because the Local Cookies popup and another banner are both on, for example Shopify's own cookie banner or a consent app. The Local Cookies popup shows to every customer who has not answered yet. Keep one of them: remove the Cookies block from the Popups section, or turn off the other banner. See Cookie consent popup.
