Exit intent popup section
The Exit intent popup section of Local opens a popup on desktop when the customer moves the mouse to the top of the page to leave.
Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 2.4.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.
The exit intent popup opens when a customer on a computer moves the mouse up to the top edge of the browser window, usually to close the tab or type another address. Use it for a last offer, a discount code or a newsletter invitation.
Where to find it: Exit intent popup (Theme editor sidebar, after the Footer group)
Popup content
- Enable popup turns the exit intent popup on, on every page.
- Title and Text are the heading and the message, "Before you leave" by default.
- Button label adds a button; Button link is where it goes, for example a sale collection. With no label, the popup has no button. Open link in a new window opens the link in a new tab.
Functionality
- Popup frequency sets how long Local waits before showing the popup again to a customer who closed it: Show each day, Show each week (default) or Show each month.
How it behaves:
- The popup opens once per page view, when the mouse moves upward to within 20 px of the top of the window.
- It never opens in the theme editor; select the section to preview it.
- The frequency is remembered in the customer's browser, per device.
In Local 4.2.1, Show each month shows the popup only once: after the customer closes it, it does not come back in that browser.
Colors
- Background color and Text color set the colors of the popup.
Turning on the exit intent popup
Open the section
In the theme editor, select Exit intent popup in the sidebar, after the Footer group.
Write the message
Write the Title and the Text. To send customers somewhere, add a Button label and a Button link.
Choose the frequency and colors
Set Popup frequency, Background color and Text color.
Turn it on and test it
Turn on Enable popup and select Save. Open your store in a private browser window on a computer, wait for the page to load, then move the mouse quickly up past the top of the page.
Why does the exit intent popup not show on mobile?
Because it reacts to mouse movement only. Phones and tablets have no mouse pointer moving toward the top of the window, so the popup never opens on touch devices. For mobile customers, use a timed popup from the Popups section.
Why did the popup show once and never again?
Because the customer closed it and the Popup frequency period has not passed yet in that browser, or because the popup is set to Show each month, which shows it only once in Local 4.2.1. Test with a private browser window.
