Age verification section
The Age verification section of Local blocks the store behind a popup until the customer confirms their age, with your own text and colors.
Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.
The Age verification section covers the whole store with a popup as soon as a page opens. Customers can only continue by selecting its button, for example to confirm they are over 18. Use it for stores that sell wine, spirits, tobacco or other age-restricted products.

Popup content
- Enable popup turns the age verification on, on every page of the store.
- Heading is the title of the popup, "Age verification" by default.
- Text is the message, by default "By clicking enter, I certify that I am over the age of 18".
- Button label is the text of the only button, "Enter" by default.
How it behaves:
- The popup opens immediately and the page behind it cannot be scrolled. The Escape key and a click outside the popup do not close it.
- After the customer selects the button, the popup stays hidden in that browser for 28 days, then asks again.
- In the theme editor, the popup does not open by itself; select the section to preview it.
Colors
- Background color and Text color set the colors of the popup. The button follows these colors.
Turning on age verification
Open the section
In the theme editor, select Age verification in the sidebar, after the Footer group.
Write the texts
Write the Heading, the Text and the Button label, for example "Are you over 18?", a short sentence about your age policy, and "Yes, enter the store".
Set the colors
Set Background color and Text color to match your store.
Turn it on
Turn on Enable popup and select Save. Open your store in a private browser window to see the popup as a new customer would.
Does age verification check a real age?
No. The popup is a notice with a single button: it does not ask for a date of birth, and it has no button to leave the store. Any customer who selects the button can enter. Local does not support a legal age check. If your products need one, use an age verification app.
Can I show the age verification only on some products?
No. When Enable popup is on, the popup covers every page of the store. Local does not support age verification for selected products or collections. Use an age verification app instead.

Every setting, with its type and default.
Enable popup (checkbox, default: off): Covers every page with the age verification popup until the customer selects the button. The answer is remembered in the browser for 28 days.
Heading (text field, default: "Age verification"): Sets the title of the popup.
Text (rich text, default: "By clicking enter, I certify that I am over the age of 18"): Sets the message of the popup.
Button label (text field, default: "Enter"): Sets the label of the only button, which closes the popup.
