What image sizes should I use in Local?
Image sizes for Local: recommended resolutions for each media aspect ratio, slideshow heights on desktop and mobile, and logo images.
Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.
There is no single ideal image size, but a few rules make your images look their best in Local. Many sections have height options, and the others show images at the aspect ratio you choose or at their own proportions.
Where to find it: the image settings of each section, and Theme settings → Product card → Media aspect ratio for product cards
Product images and promotion cards
Give all your product images the same size and shape. Then choose the matching Media aspect ratio in Theme settings → Product card: Natural (the default, no cropping) or a crop to Short (4:3), Square (1:1), Tall (5:6) or Taller (2:3). Sections with their own aspect ratio setting, such as Promotion cards or Collection list, crop their images the same way.
When an image is cropped to an aspect ratio, Local requests it at these sizes. Upload images at least at the minimum size, ideally at the optimal one:
| Aspect ratio | Minimum | Optimal | Maximum used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short (4:3) | 1280 x 960 px | 2100 x 1575 px | 3820 x 2865 px |
| Square (1:1) | 1280 x 1280 px | 2100 x 2100 px | 3820 x 3820 px |
| Tall (5:6) | 1280 x 1536 px | 2100 x 2520 px | 3820 x 4584 px |
| Taller (2:3) | 1280 x 1920 px | 2100 x 3150 px | 3820 x 5730 px |
Local never asks for an image larger than the one you uploaded, so a smaller image still works; it is only less sharp on large, high-resolution screens.
Slideshow images
The Flex slideshow and the Slideshow (legacy) set their height as a share of the screen height, not in pixels:
| Height option | Share of the screen height | On a 1080 px tall desktop screen |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 40 percent | 432 px |
| Regular | 50 percent | 540 px |
| Medium | 60 percent | 648 px |
| Large | 80 percent | 864 px |
| Extra large (Flex slideshow only) | 100 percent | 1080 px |
Desktop heights are never lower than 450 px. Mobile height applies to screens narrower than 1024 px, using the same percentages of the phone or tablet screen.
The images fill the slide and are cropped at the edges. Use these widths:
- Full width slideshow: 1920 px wide images on desktop.
- Slideshow inside the page width: images as wide as Theme settings → Layout → Maximum page width (1360 px by default).
- Phones: a separate Mobile image (optional) of about 750 px wide, in portrait format.
Double these values if you want more sharp images and have the proper media available.
Keep the important part of the image in the middle, or set its focal point in the Shopify image editor, so it stays visible at every screen size. Turn on Auto height to show the images uncropped instead.
Logo image
Upload the logo at twice the height you set in the Header section (Desktop logo image maximum height, 20 to 100 px), so it stays sharp on high-resolution screens. For example, for a 50 px logo, upload an image at least 100 px tall. A PNG or SVG with a transparent background works on any header color.
Other sections
For other sections with height options (for example Media with text overlay, Rich text or Image comparison), try the options with your own images and keep the one that crops them best. The Image section never crops: it shows the whole image, so its proportions decide the height of the section.
Why do my images look blurry?
Because the uploaded image is smaller than the space it fills. Upload a larger image (see the tables above), at least twice the displayed size for high-resolution screens. Shopify serves smaller versions automatically to small screens, so a large upload does not slow down phones.
Why are my slideshow images cut off?
Because the slide height is a share of the screen height and the image fills it. On a wide screen, a tall image loses its top and bottom; on a phone, a wide image loses its sides. Upload a portrait Mobile image (optional), set a focal point, or turn on Auto height.
