Maps theme settings
The Maps theme settings hold the Google Maps API key and Map ID that the Local store selector and Stores map section need for a live map.
Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.
Local can show your stores on a live Google map in two places: the Store selector popup and the Stores map section. Both need a Google Maps API key, which you create in your own Google Cloud account and paste here. A Map ID is optional.
Where to find it: Theme settings → Maps
What the map needs
- Google Maps API key connects your store to Google Maps. Without it, Google refuses to load the map and the map area stays empty.
- Google Maps Map ID is optional. With a Map ID, the map takes its style from Google Cloud and uses Google's newer markers. In the Store selector and the Stores map section, Map style is then hidden and Tag style pin appears instead, which shows each store's name as a label on the map.
- Each store needs a Latitude and a Longitude. Local places the pins from these coordinates; it does not look up addresses.
- The map shows only where you turn on Enable dynamic map: in the Store selector section, the Stores map section, or both.
Local uses only Google's Maps JavaScript API. You do not need the Geocoding or Places API.
Setting up a Google Maps API key
Create a Google Cloud project
Open Google Cloud Console and sign in with a Google account. Create a project for your store, for example "My store maps".
Turn on billing
Google Maps Platform needs a billing account on the project, even when your use stays within Google's free monthly usage. Follow Google's prompt to add one.
Enable the Maps JavaScript API
In the project, open APIs & Services → Library, search for Maps JavaScript API and select Enable.
Create the API key
Open APIs & Services → Credentials and select Create credentials → API key. Google shows the new key; copy it.
Restrict the key to your store
Open the key. Under Application restrictions, choose Websites and add your store's domains, for example https://www.yourstore.com/* and https://yourstore.myshopify.com/*. Under API restrictions, restrict the key to the Maps JavaScript API. Save.
Paste the key in the theme
In the theme editor, open Theme settings → Maps and paste the key in Google Maps API key. Select Save.
Turn on the map
Open the Store selector section or a Stores map section, turn on Enable dynamic map, and check that every Store block has its Latitude and Longitude. See Store selector section and Stores map section.
Add every domain your store opens on to the key restrictions, including your myshopify.com address. A domain that is missing from the list gets an empty map.
Setting up a Map ID
A Map ID lets you style the map in Google Cloud instead of choosing one of Local's six map styles.
Create the Map ID
In Google Cloud Console, open Google Maps Platform → Map management (the link in the editor's help text) and select Create Map ID. Choose the map type JavaScript, then Vector or Raster, and save.
Style the map (optional)
In Google Maps Platform → Map styles, create a style and associate it with your Map ID. Without a style, the map uses Google's standard look.
Paste the Map ID in the theme
Copy the Map ID and paste it in Theme settings → Maps → Google Maps Map ID. Select Save.
Choose the pins
In the Store selector and in each Stores map section, turn on Tag style pin to show store names on the map, or leave it off to keep the image pins (the default pin or each store's Custom pin).
Does the map cost money?
Google Maps Platform pricing is set by Google, not by Local. Google gives a free monthly usage and charges above it, and the numbers change; see Google Maps Platform pricing. You can set budgets and quotas in Google Cloud to cap the cost.
What Local controls is how often a map loads:
- A map loads when it scrolls into view, or 10 seconds after the page opens, whichever comes first.
- The Store selector popup is part of every page, even when it stays closed. With Enable dynamic map on in the Store selector (and at least one Store block), every page view loads a map, about 10 seconds after the page opens.
- With the map off in the Store selector, only pages with a Stores map section (map on) load Google Maps.
Why is the map not showing?
Usually because Google refuses the key, or the map is off in the section. Check these, in order:
- Google Maps API key is filled in Theme settings → Maps.
- The Maps JavaScript API is enabled in the Google Cloud project of that key, and billing is set up.
- The key's website restrictions include the domain you are looking at.
- Enable dynamic map is on in the section.
- The Store blocks have both Latitude and Longitude.

All Maps settings
Every setting, with its type and default.
Google Maps API key (text field): Connects the Store selector map and the Stores map section to Google Maps. Create the key in your Google Cloud project with the Maps JavaScript API enabled; see the steps on the Maps theme settings page (/local/maps). Without it, the map area stays empty.
Google Maps Map ID (text field): Uses a Map ID from Google Cloud for the map style and Google's advanced markers. When set, Map style is hidden in the map sections and Tag style pin appears.
