Cart theme settings

The Cart theme settings choose the cart type of Local (page, drawer or popup), notes, discounts, terms, recommendations, free shipping and gift wrapping.

Applies to: Local 4.2.1 and later. Added in: Local 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Local 4.2.1.

The Cart settings choose what customers see when they add a product to the cart, and what the cart offers: notes, discount codes, a terms checkbox, recommendations, a free shipping message and gift wrapping.

Where to find it: Theme settings → Cart

Cart type

  • Cart type chooses what happens when a customer adds a product or selects the cart icon:
    • Drawer (default): the cart opens in a drawer at the side of the page, and the customer stays on the page.
    • Page: the customer goes to the cart page.
    • Popup notification: a small panel at the top of the page confirms the added item, with View cart and Checkout buttons.
  • Drawer cart action buttons (Drawer only) chooses the buttons at the bottom of the drawer: the "view cart" button, the "checkout" button, or both.
  • Stick action buttons at the bottom of the cart drawer (Drawer only) keeps the subtotal and the buttons visible while the customer scrolls a long cart.
  • Show additional checkout buttons shows Shopify's express checkout buttons, such as Shop Pay or PayPal, under the Checkout button. They show on the cart page, and in the drawer only when Drawer cart action buttons includes the checkout button.

The additional checkout buttons can't be edited, they are created on the fly by Shopify based on your available payment methods and the current customer's profile. Also, they will disappear after any change to the cart (adding more items, removing an item or changing the quantity).

Notes and discounts

  • Enable cart notes adds a note field to the cart drawer and the cart page, for instructions to the store. The note reaches the order in Shopify admin.
  • Enable cart discounts adds a discount code field, so customers can apply a code before checkout. Applied codes show under the field, each with a remove button.
  • Discount text adds a short line under the discount field, for example where to find a code.
  • Make notes & discount fields collapsible inside cart drawer folds both fields in the drawer, so it stays short; customers select a field's title to open it.

Terms and conditions

  • Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout adds a checkbox above the Checkout button. The button stays disabled until the customer checks the box.
  • Checkbox label is the text next to the box. You can add a link to your terms page.

Publish your terms

In Shopify admin → Settings → Policies, write your terms of service, or create a page with your terms in Online Store → Pages.

Turn on the checkbox

In the theme editor, open Theme settings → Cart and turn on Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout.

In Checkbox label, write the text, select the words "terms and conditions" and add a link to your terms. Select Save.

The checkbox blocks the Checkout button only. The express checkout buttons from Show additional checkout buttons are not blocked by it.

Media aspect ratio

  • Aspect ratio sets the shape of the small product images in the cart, the search popup, the cart recommendations and other places with small thumbnails: Square (1:1), Tall (5:6) or Taller (2:3).
  • Fit media inside container shows the whole image inside that shape instead of cropping it.

Product recommendations

  • Show cart recommendations adds product suggestions to the cart drawer, based on the items in the cart. Shopify chooses the products, and the suggestions improve with time.
  • Heading is the title above the suggestions, "Often bought together" by default.
  • Enable quick buy adds a buy button to each suggestion.

The cart page has its own related products, set in the Cart section. See Cart page.

Shipping

  • Show free shipping minimum amount shows a message in the cart drawer and on the cart page: "You are $X away from free shipping." until the cart reaches the amount, then "You are eligible for free shipping!".
  • Free shipping minimum amount is the amount in your store's default currency, written as a number only (for example 50). For customers who shop in another currency, Local converts it with the current exchange rate.

Gift wrapping

Gift wrapping is a checkbox in the cart. When the customer checks it, Local adds a gift wrapping product to the cart; unchecking it removes the product again.

  • Product is the product that stands for the gift wrapping. Its price is the gift wrapping price.
  • Text is the checkbox label, "Please wrap the products in this order" by default.

The checkbox shows in the cart drawer and on the cart page as soon as a product is selected.

Setting up gift wrapping

Create the gift wrapping product

In Shopify admin → Products, select Add product. Name it, for example "Gift wrapping", and set the price. Give it no variants, so it has a single price.

Make it available on the Online Store

Set the product to Active and make sure it is published to the Online Store sales channel. If it tracks inventory, give it enough stock or allow selling when out of stock.

Select it in the theme

In the theme editor, open Theme settings → Cart → Gift wrapping. Select the product in Product and write the checkbox label in Text.

Test the checkbox

Select Save, add any product to the cart and check the gift wrapping box. The gift wrapping product appears in the cart; unchecking the box removes it.

Use a gift wrapping product without variants, and keep Theme settings → Product card → Always open quick buy modal off. Local adds the gift wrapping with its quick buy: a product with variants, or that setting on, opens the Quick view popup instead of adding the product.

Setting up the free shipping message

Set the free shipping rate in Shopify

In Shopify admin → Settings → Shipping and delivery, add a free shipping rate with a minimum order price, for example free shipping from $50. This rate is what customers really get at checkout.

Turn on the message

In the theme editor, open Theme settings → Cart → Shipping and turn on Show free shipping minimum amount.

Type the same amount

Type the same minimum in Free shipping minimum amount, as a number without a currency sign, in your store's default currency. Select Save.

The message is information only. Local does not change shipping prices: if the amount in the theme and the rate in Shopify admin differ, customers see a promise the checkout does not keep. Local supports one amount for all markets.

Can customers enter a discount code in the cart?

Yes. Turn on Enable cart discounts. Customers type the code in the cart drawer or on the cart page, and Local applies it to the cart before checkout. Customers can still enter codes at checkout too.

Does the free shipping message use the cart total before or after discounts?

After. Local compares the amount with the cart total, which already includes cart discounts. Shopify's free shipping rate may use a different rule, so check that both agree with a test order.
