Cart theme settings
The Cart theme settings of Borders choose drawer or page, notes and discounts, thumbnails, terms checkbox, free shipping bar and gift wrapping.

The Cart theme settings choose how the cart opens and what it contains: notes, discount codes, the terms checkbox, the free shipping bar and gift wrapping. They apply to both the cart drawer and the cart page.

Cart type
- Cart type sets what happens when a customer adds a product to the cart. Drawer (default) opens the cart drawer on the same page. Page takes the customer to the cart page.
- With Page, the cart icon in the header also opens the cart page, and the Cart drawer section is not used.
- Show additional checkout buttons shows Shopify's accelerated checkout buttons (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal and others) under the checkout button.
The additional checkout buttons can't be edited, they are created on the fly by Shopify based on your available payment methods and the current customer's profile. Also, they will disappear after any change to the cart (adding more items, removing an item or changing the quantity).
Notes and discounts
- Enable cart notes adds a field where customers write a note for the order, for example delivery instructions.
- Enable cart discounts adds a discount code field. Customers can enter a code before checkout; applied codes show in the cart with a remove link.
- Discount text adds a short line under the discount field, for example "Codes are applied at checkout".
- Make notes & discount fields collapsible inside cart drawer folds both fields into toggles in the cart drawer, so they take less room. It shows only with Cart type Drawer.
Media aspect ratio
Aspect ratio sets the shape of small product thumbnails: Square (1:1), Tall (5:6) or Taller (2:3). It applies to the items in the cart drawer and cart page, the products in the search drawer results and other small product images, such as the cart recommendation. Product cards in grids use the ratio in Product card theme settings.
Terms and conditions
- Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout adds a checkbox above the checkout button. The checkout button stays disabled until the customer selects it.
- Checkbox label is the text next to the checkbox. It accepts links, so you can link your terms page.
Shipping
- Show free shipping minimum amount shows a progress bar in the cart drawer and on the cart page, with the amount still missing for free shipping ("You are … away from free shipping") or a message once the cart qualifies.
- Free shipping minimum amount is the threshold, as a number in your store's default currency (for example
50). For customers who shop in another currency, Borders converts it with Shopify's current exchange rate. - The bar only shows progress. The free shipping rate itself is set in Shopify admin → Settings → Shipping and delivery.
Gift wrapping
- Product chooses the product used as gift wrapping. When it is set, the cart shows a checkbox.
- Text is the checkbox label (default: "Please wrap the products in this order").
- Selecting the checkbox adds one unit of the product's first available variant to the cart; clearing it removes it. The gift wrapping has no quantity selector.
Setting up the free shipping bar
Create the free shipping rate
In Shopify admin → Settings → Shipping and delivery, add a free shipping rate with a minimum order price, for example free above 50.
Turn on the bar
In the theme editor, open Theme settings → Cart → Shipping and turn on Show free shipping minimum amount.
Type the same threshold
Type the same amount in Free shipping minimum amount: a number only, without a currency sign, in the store's default currency.
Check the cart
Add a product to the cart: the drawer shows how much is missing until free shipping.
Setting up gift wrapping
Create the gift wrapping product
In Shopify admin → Products, add a product named for example "Gift wrapping" with its price and an image. Make it available in the Online Store sales channel, and keep it in stock (or allow selling when out of stock).
Choose it in the theme
In the theme editor, open Theme settings → Cart → Gift wrapping and select the product in Product.
Write the checkbox label
Change Text if you want another label for the checkbox.
Test it in the cart
Add a product to the cart and select the checkbox. The gift wrapping product appears in the cart with its price.
The gift wrapping product is a normal product, so it can appear in search results and in automated collections. Keep it out of your collections, and check your collection conditions so it is not added automatically.
Why does the cart page open instead of the cart drawer?
Cart type is set to Page. Set it to Drawer in Theme settings → Cart. The cart drawer and its settings (Drawers group → Cart drawer) work only with Cart type Drawer.
Can I set a different free shipping amount per market?
No. Borders does not support different free shipping thresholds per market. Free shipping minimum amount is one amount, converted with the exchange rate, so the converted value may not match local round prices. Use the same converted amounts in your shipping rates per market, or hide the bar. See What Borders does not do.

Cart type (dropdown, default: Drawer): Sets what happens after a product is added to the cart: Drawer opens the cart drawer on the same page, Page goes to the cart page. The Cart drawer section works only with Drawer. Options: Page, Drawer.
Show additional checkout buttons (checkbox, default: off): Shows Shopify's accelerated checkout buttons (for example Shop Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal) under the checkout button. Shopify renders them; they cannot be styled and disappear after any change to the cart until the page reloads.

Where to find it: Theme settings → Cart → Notes and discounts
Enable cart notes (checkbox, default: on): Adds an order note field to the cart drawer and the cart page.
Enable cart discounts (checkbox, default: on): Adds a discount code field to the cart, where customers apply and remove codes before checkout.
Discount text (text field): Shows a short line of text under the discount code field. Shown only when Enable cart discounts is on.
Make notes & discount fields collapsible inside cart drawer (checkbox, default: on): Folds the note and discount fields of the cart drawer into toggles that open on click. Shown only when Cart type is Drawer and either Enable cart discounts is on, or Enable cart notes is on.
Cart theme settings: Media aspect ratio
Where to find it: Theme settings → Cart → Media aspect ratio
Changes the aspect ratio for small product thumbnails used in the cart, search popup and some other areas that require small product thumbnails.
Aspect ratio (dropdown, default: Tall (5:6)): Sets the shape of small product thumbnails: cart items, search drawer results, the cart drawer recommendation and other small product images. Options: Square (1:1), Tall (5:6), Taller (2:3).

Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout (checkbox, default: off): Adds a required checkbox above the checkout button; checkout stays disabled until the customer selects it.
Checkbox label (formatted text, default: "I agree to the terms and conditions"). Shown only when Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout is on.

Show free shipping minimum amount (checkbox, default: off): Shows a bar in the cart drawer and on the cart page with the amount left until free shipping. It only shows progress: the free shipping rate is set in Shopify admin → Settings → Shipping and delivery.
Free shipping minimum amount (text field, default: "50"): The free shipping threshold, as a plain number in the store's default currency (for example 50). Other currencies use Shopify's current exchange rate. Shown only when Show free shipping minimum amount is on.
Cart theme settings: Gift wrapping
Where to find it: Theme settings → Cart → Gift wrapping
Gift wrapping needs to be set up as a product.
Product (product picker): The product added when the customer selects the gift wrapping checkbox in the cart (its first available variant, one unit). Clearing the checkbox removes it.
Text (text field, default: "Please wrap the products in this order"): The label of the gift wrapping checkbox in the cart. Shown only when Product is set.
