Collection page

The Collection page template in Highlight: collection image and description, asymmetrical or regular grid, filters, sorting and a promotional block.

Applies to: Highlight 4.1.0 and later. Added in: Highlight 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Highlight 4.1.0.

The collection page lists the products of one collection, with its title, an optional image and description, filters and sorting, and an optional promotional block between the products. Everything is set in the Collection page section.

Where to find it: open Collections → Default collection in the theme editor and select the Collection page section.

Collection image and description

  • Show collection image shows the collection's image at the top, next to the title. It appears only for collections that have an image, and it changes the header layout a little.
  • Show collection description shows the collection's description under the title.
  • Both are off by default. The image and description themselves are set on each collection in Shopify admin → Products → Collections.

Product grid

  • Layout sets how products are arranged. Asymmetrical (the default) gives products different widths and positions, with a parallax movement while scrolling. Regular grid shows evenly aligned products, three per row on desktop.
  • Products per page (12 to 248, in steps of 4, default 24) sets how many products load before the page links to the next page.

The Asymmetrical layout works well with Theme settings → Product card → Media aspect ratio set to Natural, so images of different shapes sit side by side. With a Regular grid, a cropped ratio gives cleaner rows. See Product card theme settings.

Product filtering

  • Enable filtering shows the filters above the products. Enable sorting shows the sort menu. Both are on by default.
  • Image filter layout sets whether filters shown as images list their values in 1 column or 2 columns.
  • Filters shown as swatches use the colors and images of Shopify's swatches.

To configure the filters on your store you will need to install Shopify Search & Discovery app.

Setting up filters

Install Shopify Search & Discovery

Install the free Shopify Search & Discovery app from the Shopify App Store.

Add the filters

In the app, open Filters and add the ones you need, for example availability, price, product type, an option such as Size or Color, or a product metafield.

Choose how each filter looks

For a color option, choose to show the values as swatches; for a pattern or style, as images. Values shown as swatches use Shopify's category metafield swatches.

Turn on filtering in the theme

In the theme editor, select the Collection page section and check that Enable filtering is on. For image filters, choose Image filter layout.

The search results page has the same three settings, off by default. See Search page.

Promotional block

  • Show promotional block adds a block with a short text and a button between the products, to tell customers about the collection or an offer.
  • Content is the text; Button label and Button link add a link button under it. The button shows only when both are filled.
  • With Asymmetrical the block follows the 4th product. With Regular grid it follows the 5th product on desktop and tablets, and the 4th on phones.
  • The block needs at least 5 products (Asymmetrical) or 4 products (Regular grid) on the page.
  • The settings are the same as in the Featured collection section, with one difference: if your collection has several pages, the block shows only on the first page.

Why does the promotional block show only on the first page?

Because Highlight shows it only on page 1 of a collection. The next pages, reached with the page links at the bottom, show products only. To give customers more products before the page ends, raise Products per page.

Why are there no filters on my collection page?

Because no filters are set up, or filtering is off. Check that Enable filtering is on in the Collection page section, and that you added filters in the Shopify Search & Discovery app. Shopify also hides filters on collections with more than 5,000 products. See Troubleshoot product and collection pages.

Why do my products jump around on the page?

Because the Asymmetrical layout gives each product its own size and position, and moves some of them at a different speed while scrolling. This is the layout's design. Set Layout to Regular grid for evenly aligned rows.
