404 page

The 404 page template is the page Highlight shows for a link that does not exist; it has no settings of its own.

Applies to: Highlight 4.1.0 and later. Added in: Highlight 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Highlight 4.1.0.

The 404 page template is the page Highlight shows when a customer opens a link that does not exist, for example a deleted product. It has no settings of its own.

Where to find it: Online Store → Themes → Customize → choose 404 page in the page menu at the top → Main 404 section.

What the page shows

  • The heading "Page not found".
  • The line "The page you are looking for cannot be found".
  • A Continue browsing button that opens the page with all your products.

You can add other sections under the Main 404 section, for example a Featured collection or a Collection list, to give customers somewhere to go.

How do I change the text of the 404 page?

The texts are theme content, not settings. Change them in Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes → … → Edit default theme content: search for "Page not found".

Create a URL redirect in Shopify admin, from the old address to the new one. Customers then reach the new page instead of the 404 page. See URL redirects in the Shopify Help Center.

All 404 page settings

Every setting, with its type and default.

  • Page: regular pages and the bundled page templates.
  • Search page: the search results page.
  • Sections: sections you can add under the 404 message.
