Cart theme settings

The Cart theme settings of Combine set the cart drawer or page, notes, discount codes, terms checkbox, recommendations, free shipping bar and gift wrapping.

Applies to: Combine 4.2.0 and later. Added in: Combine 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Combine 4.2.0.

The Cart theme settings choose between a cart drawer and a cart page, and set what the cart shows: notes, discount codes, a terms checkbox, product recommendations, a free shipping bar and gift wrapping. Most of them apply to both the drawer and the cart page.

Where to find it: Theme settings → Cart

Cart type and buttons

  • Cart type decides what happens when a customer adds a product. Drawer (the default) opens the cart drawer on the side of the page. Page takes the customer to the cart page.
  • Drawer cart action buttons shows a "View cart" button, a "Checkout" button, or both, at the bottom of the drawer.
  • Stick action buttons at the bottom of the cart drawer keeps the total and the buttons in view while the customer scrolls a long cart.
  • Show additional checkout buttons adds Shopify's accelerated checkout buttons (Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay and others) under the checkout button. In the drawer they need the "Checkout" button to be shown.

The additional checkout buttons can't be edited, they are created on the fly by Shopify based on your available payment methods and the current customer's profile. Also, they will disappear after any change to the cart (adding more items, removing an item or changing the quantity).

The Quick buy popup in Theme settings → Product card replaces the drawer when it is on: products added from product grids show a short "added to cart" message instead. See Product card theme settings.

Notes and discounts

  • Enable cart notes adds an "Order instructions" field. The note reaches you with the order.
  • Enable cart discounts adds a discount code field, so customers can apply a code before checkout. Applied codes show as removable tags.
  • Discount text adds a short line under the discount field, for example where to find a code.
  • Make notes & discount fields collapsible inside cart drawer folds both fields into titles that open with a click, which keeps the drawer short. The cart page always shows them open.

Terms and conditions

  • Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout adds a checkbox that the customer must check before the checkout button works.
  • Checkbox label is the text next to the checkbox. Add a link to your terms page in it.

The terms checkbox blocks only the theme's checkout button. Shopify's additional checkout buttons (Shop Pay, PayPal and others) still work without it. Turn off Show additional checkout buttons if every customer must check the box.

Media aspect ratio

  • Aspect ratio crops the small product images in the cart: Square (1:1), Tall (5:6) or Taller (2:3). The same ratio is used for the other small product images: the search drawer, the cart recommendations, the Product popup, hotspots and small product lists on the product page.
  • Fit media inside container shows the whole image without cropping, on a Container background color.

Individual product recommendation

  • Product shows one product of your choice in the cart, with an add to cart button, for example a bestseller or an accessory.
  • Heading is the title above it. The recommendation shows in the drawer and on the cart page, and hides while the cart is empty.

Product recommendations

  • Show cart recommendations adds a slider of up to six related products to the cart drawer. Shopify picks them from the first product in the cart, so they change as the cart changes.
  • Heading is the title above the slider.
  • Enable quick buy adds an add to cart button to each recommended product.

The cart page has its own recommendations section, set in the Cart page template. See Cart page.

Setting up the free shipping bar

The free shipping bar tells customers how much more they need to spend for free shipping, with a progress bar. It shows in the cart drawer and on the cart page.

Create the free shipping rate in Shopify

Open Shopify admin → Settings → Shipping and delivery and add a free rate with a minimum order price, for example free shipping from 50. Shopify charges shipping at checkout from this rate, not from the theme.

Turn on the bar

Open Theme settings → Cart → Shipping and turn on Show free shipping minimum amount.

Enter the same amount

Type the minimum into Free shipping minimum amount as a number only, for example 50. Use the amount in your store's default currency.

Check the cart

Add a product to the cart on the storefront. The bar shows the amount left, and "You are eligible for free shipping!" once the cart total reaches the minimum.

The bar compares the minimum with the cart total after discounts. For customers who shop in another currency, Combine converts the minimum with Shopify's exchange rate.

Setting up gift wrapping

Gift wrapping adds a checkbox to the cart. When the customer checks it, Combine adds your gift wrapping product to the cart; when they clear it, Combine removes it. The gift wrapping line has no quantity selector.

Create the gift wrapping product

In Shopify admin → Products, add a product named for example "Gift wrapping", with its price and an image. Make it available on the Online Store and keep it in stock, or turn off inventory tracking.

Pick the product in the theme

Open Theme settings → Cart → Gift wrapping and select the product in Product.

Write the checkbox text

Change Text if you want another label than "Please wrap the products in this order".

Check the cart

Add a product to the cart, then select the checkbox in the drawer or on the cart page. The gift wrapping product appears in the cart.

Combine adds the first available variant of the gift wrapping product. A sold out or unpublished product cannot be added, and the checkbox then does nothing.

Can I set a different free shipping amount per market?

No. Combine does not support a free shipping minimum per market. Free shipping minimum amount is one amount, converted to each customer's currency with Shopify's exchange rate. If your markets have different free shipping rules, turn the bar off or keep the amount that matches most customers.

Why does the free shipping bar show a different amount than my shipping rate?

The bar uses Free shipping minimum amount, not your Shopify shipping rate. Make the two the same. The bar also uses the total after discounts, and a converted amount in other currencies, so it can differ slightly from a rate set in a local currency.
