How Borders is built

How Borders pages are made: the Header, Drawers, Footer and Overlay groups, template sections, section blocks and theme blocks.

Applies to: Borders 3.1.0 and later. Added in: Borders 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Borders 3.1.0.

Every Borders page is made of the same layers: four section groups that show on every page, the sections of the page's template, and the blocks inside those sections. Knowing which layer a setting lives in tells you where to change it.

Where to find it: Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes → Customize. The theme editor sidebar lists the groups and sections of the page you are viewing.

Section groups

A section group is a set of sections that Borders shows on every page. In the theme editor sidebar, the Header group sits above the template sections, and the Footer, Drawers and Overlay groups below them.

GroupSections it ships withSections you can add
Header groupHeaderAnnouncement bar, Scrolling text, Custom HTML / Liquid, Apps
Drawers groupNavigation drawer, Cart drawer, Search drawerFlex columns, Table
Footer groupFooter, Copyright barmost template sections, for example Rich text or Email signup
Overlay groupNewsletter, Popovers, Rotating badgesExit intent popup, Age verification, Go to top, Flex columns, Table
  • Header, Footer, Copyright bar, the three drawers, Newsletter, Popovers and Rotating badges have no entry in Add section. To take one of them off the store, hide it with the eye icon in the sidebar instead of removing it.
  • Announcement bar and the header version of Scrolling text can only be added to the Header group. They have a Visibility setting that limits them to some page types.
  • Exit intent popup, Age verification and Go to top can only be added to the Overlay group.

See Header group, Drawers group, Footer group and Overlay group.

Show an announcement only on product pages

Add the section to the Header group

In the theme editor, under Header group, select Add section and choose Announcement bar (or Scrolling text for moving text).

Write the content

Type your message in Content.

Limit it to product pages

Set Visibility to Product pages only. The other options are All pages, Homepage only and All pages except the homepage.

Place it above or below the header

Drag the section above or below Header in the sidebar, then select Save.

Template sections

A template is the layout of one page type: the home page, product pages, collection pages, blog posts and so on. Its sections sit between the Header group and the Footer group.

  • Select Add section in the template area to add a section to that template only.
  • Changes to a template apply to every page that uses it, for example every product that uses the default product template.
  • Some templates have a main section that cannot be removed, for example Product page on product templates and Collection page on collection templates. See Product page and Collection page.
  • Collection description and Collection navigation can only be added to collection templates.

See Borders sections for every section you can add.

Section blocks and theme blocks

Inside a section, content is made of blocks. Borders uses two kinds:

  • Section blocks belong to one section and are listed only there, for example the Slide block of the Vertical slider or the Promotion block of the Header. They are documented on their section's page.
  • Theme blocks can be used in several sections. Borders has six: Text, Button, Badge, Content group, Custom Liquid and Empty space. You add them inside the Column blocks of Flex columns and the cards of Flex grid. See Borders blocks.
  • App blocks come from your installed apps. You can add them to the Apps section, the Product page, Featured product, the Cart section, and inside Flex columns columns and Flex grid cards.

The grid and its borders

Borders draws every page as a grid. Three theme settings groups shape it for the whole store:

  • Theme settings → Layout: the margins around the store and the padding and corner radius of grid items. See Layout theme settings.
  • Theme settings → Borders: the line around the store, the primary borders between grid items and the secondary borders between sections. See Borders theme settings.
  • Theme settings → Colors: the color schemes, each with its own border color. See Colors theme settings.

Most sections can then change their own look under Section design and Inner content design. See General section styling.

Which sections can go where?

Most sections go in any template and in the Footer group. The other groups accept only a few:

  • Header group: Announcement bar, Scrolling text (header version), Custom HTML / Liquid and Apps.
  • Drawers group: only Flex columns and Table. The drawers themselves cannot be added again.
  • Overlay group: Exit intent popup, Age verification, Go to top, Flex columns and Table.
  • Collection templates only: Collection description and Collection navigation.
  • Not on the password page: Blog posts, Collection list, Featured collection, Featured product, Image with hotspots and Shop the look.

If a section is missing from Add section, you are in a group or template that does not accept it.
