Recommended image sizes
Recommended image sizes for Borders: how aspect ratio settings crop images, and the minimum, optimal and maximum resolution per ratio.
Applies to: Borders 3.1.0 and later. Added in: Borders 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Borders 3.1.0.
Borders is a responsive theme: it always tries to serve the best image for each screen, so you do not have to resize images for performance. What you do need to plan for is the aspect ratio, because Borders crops images to the ratio set in each section.
Where to find it: the aspect ratio settings of each section (for example Vertical slider → Desktop aspect ratio) and Theme settings → Product card → Media aspect ratio.
How Borders crops images
- Most sections have an aspect ratio setting, so you can choose the layout that suits your images.
- Borders crops the image to that ratio from the center. Keep the subject in the middle of the image.
- Borders serves the image in widths from 240 to 3820 px and lets the browser pick the one that fits the screen.
- Each section offers its own list of ratios. For example, the Vertical slider offers Ultra-Wide (21:9) to Square (1:1) on desktop and Landscape (16:9) to Taller (2:3) on mobile, while product cards offer Landscape (16:9) to Taller (2:3).
- Some sections let you upload a separate mobile image, for example the Vertical slider and the Image section. Use it when the mobile ratio is very different from the desktop one.
Image sizes by aspect ratio
Use this table as a guide when you prepare images. The width is the same for every ratio; the height follows the ratio.
| Aspect ratio | Minimum resolution | Optimal resolution | Maximum resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra-Wide (21:9) | 1280 x 548 px | 2100 x 900 px | 3820 x 1637 px |
| Wide (2:1) | 1280 x 640 px | 2100 x 1050 px | 3820 x 1910 px |
| Landscape (16:9) | 1280 x 719 px | 2100 x 1180 px | 3820 x 2146 px |
| Standard (3:2) | 1280 x 853 px | 2100 x 1400 px | 3820 x 2546 px |
| Short (4:3) | 1280 x 960 px | 2100 x 1575 px | 3820 x 2865 px |
| Square (1:1) | 1280 x 1280 px | 2100 x 2100 px | 3820 x 3820 px |
| Tall (5:6) | 1280 x 1536 px | 2100 x 2520 px | 3820 x 4584 px |
| Taller (2:3) | 1280 x 1920 px | 2100 x 3150 px | 3820 x 5730 px |
The Shoppable videos section also offers Tallest (9:16) for its fallback images; use at least 1280 x 2276 px there.
Should I upload PNG or JPG?
Upload JPG in most cases. Shopify compresses uploaded images to a certain degree, which keeps your store fast. PNG files bypass that compression, so they stay larger. Large images are fine: upload the best JPG you have, and Shopify and Borders choose the right size for each screen.
Why is my image cropped?
The image does not have the aspect ratio set in the section. Borders fills the frame at that ratio and crops the rest from the center. Either choose a ratio in the section that is closer to your image, or crop the image to the ratio before you upload it, using the table above.
