Update Borders
How to update Borders to the latest version from the Shopify Theme Store, and what happens to your settings and customizations.
Applies to: Borders 3.1.0 and later. Added in: Borders 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Borders 3.1.0.
Update Borders from your theme library to get the newest version. Your theme settings, sections and content carry over to the new version.
Where to find it: Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes.
Theme updates are controlled by Shopify, not by Borders. Shopify decides how an update is offered and what is carried over. See Updating themes in the Shopify Help Center.
Check your version
- Your theme library shows the version number on each Borders theme.
- When a newer version exists, Shopify shows an update notification on the theme.
- The newest version is Borders 3.1.0, released 2026-09-23.
- Shopify offers updates only for themes installed from the Shopify Theme Store, not for uploaded theme files.
Add the new version
Open the update notification
Open Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. On your Borders theme, select the update notification. Read What's new in Borders to see what changed.
Add the new version to your theme library
Add the update as a new theme. Shopify adds an updated copy of your theme; your live store does not change yet.
Review the updated copy
Open the copy in the theme editor and check your main pages: the home page, a product page, a collection page and the cart. Check any pages that use your own templates.
Publish the updated copy
When the copy looks right, select Publish on it in Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. Your store now runs the new Borders version.
What carries over and what does not
Shopify carries these over to the updated copy:
- Theme settings: colors, fonts, layout, borders and the other Theme settings groups.
- Sections and blocks you added, removed, reordered or hid, with their settings, images, videos and text, including the four section groups.
- Templates you created, for example extra product or page templates.
- App embeds and app blocks.
- Wording you changed in Edit default theme content.
Settings that a new Borders version renames or removes do not come back under the old name. Check What's new in Borders for renamed and removed settings.
Are my code edits kept when I update Borders?
Only when Shopify can merge them. Shopify tries to copy code edits to the new version and tells you when it could not include them. Keep a copy of every code change before you update. Krown support does not move custom code between versions; see Custom work and code changes and Update your Shopify theme.
Why do I not see an update for Borders?
You already run the newest version, or the theme was not installed from the Shopify Theme Store. Compare your version with the newest release in What's new in Borders. A theme uploaded as a .zip file gets no update notification.
