Update your Shopify theme
Update your Krown theme to the latest version: what Shopify carries over, the steps in the theme library, and how to move your code edits.
Applies to: All Krown themes. Last checked: 2026-10-13.
Krown updates its themes often: bug fixes, new features, and changes for new Shopify features. Shopify's theme update copies your theme editor work into the new version, so you do not start over.
Where to find it: Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes
The theme updating process is dependent on the Shopify platform and how this works. It is not something that we can control from our theme and this is general for any Shopify theme.
What is kept when you update?
Shopify copies these to the new version:
- Theme settings: colors, fonts and every Theme settings group.
- Sections and blocks you added, removed, reordered or hid, with their settings, images and texts.
- Templates you created, for example extra product templates.
- App blocks and app embeds.
- Texts you changed in Edit default theme content.
Code edits are different. Shopify tries to copy edits to theme files, and copies only the ones that do not conflict with the new version. The theme card then says whether your code edits were included. Edits that could not be included must be added again by hand.
Update your theme
Back up your theme
Open Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. Select the … menu on your current theme and Duplicate. The copy goes to your theme library.
Open the update notification
Your theme library shows the version number of each theme. When a newer version exists, Shopify replaces the version number with an update notification. Select it, and View release notes to see what changed.
Add the new version as a draft
Select Add to draft themes. Shopify adds a copy named "Updated copy of" and your theme name, with your settings and content. Your live store does not change yet.
Move your code edits
The theme card says whether some code edits could not be included. Add those by hand from your list of changes, or use Theme Updater Plus (see below).
Check the new version
Open the updated copy in the theme editor and check the home page, a product page, a collection page and the cart, and any page with its own template.
Publish it
When the copy looks right, select Publish on it in Online Store → Themes.
After a major version (for example 4.0.0), some settings can be renamed or reset. Read the release notes before you publish, and check the pages that use those settings.
Move your code edits to the new version
If you or a developer edited theme files, keep a list of every change: the file, what changed and why. Then add the changes that Shopify could not include to the new version. The video shows the manual transfer from 7:12.
Can I update without losing my code changes?
Often, yes: Shopify includes the code edits that do not conflict with the new version. For the rest, the Theme Updater Plus app tries to carry them over and lists what it could not transfer. It supports Local, Combine, Borders, Split, Highlight and Kingdom; Seventh is not supported yet.
Why do I not see an update for my theme?
Either you already have the latest version, or your theme was not added from the Shopify Theme Store. Shopify offers updates only for Theme Store themes, not for themes uploaded as a file. Your theme library can hold up to 20 themes (100 on Shopify Plus): delete old copies if it is full.
