Update Seventh
How to update Seventh to the latest version from the Shopify Theme Store, check which version you have, and keep your customizations.
Applies to: Seventh 4.0.0 and later. Added in: Seventh 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-12 against Seventh 4.0.0.
Update Seventh from your theme library to get the newest version. Your theme settings, sections and content carry over to the new version.
Where to find it: Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes.
Theme updates are controlled by Shopify, not by Seventh. Shopify decides how an update is offered and what is carried over. See Updating themes in the Shopify Help Center.
Check your version
- Your theme library shows the version number on each Seventh theme.
- When a newer version exists, Shopify replaces the version number with an update notification.
- The newest version is Seventh 4.0.0, released 2026-10-05.
Before you start
- Seventh installed from the Shopify Theme Store. Shopify offers updates only for themes installed from the Theme Store, not for uploaded theme files.
- A list of any code edits you or a developer made to the theme files.
- About 15 minutes, plus the time to review the new version.
Update Seventh
Open the update notification
Open Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. On your Seventh theme, select the update notification that replaces the version number. Select View release notes to see what changed, or read What's new in Seventh.
Add the new version as a draft
Select Add to draft themes. Shopify adds a copy named "Updated copy of" followed by your theme name. Your live store does not change yet.
Review the updated copy
Open the updated copy in the theme editor and check your main pages: home page, a product page, a collection page and the cart. Check any pages that use custom templates.
Publish the updated copy
When the copy looks right, select Publish on it in Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. Your store now runs the new Seventh version.
What the update keeps
Shopify carries these over to the updated copy:
- Theme settings, including colors, fonts and the Theme settings groups.
- Sections and blocks you added, removed, reordered or hid, with their settings, images, videos and text.
- Templates you created, for example extra product or page templates.
- App embed and app block settings.
- Wording you changed in the theme content editor (Edit theme content).
Settings that a new Seventh version renames or removes do not come back under the old name. Check What's new in Seventh for renamed and removed settings.
Are my code edits kept when I update Seventh?
Only when they do not conflict with the update. Shopify tries to copy code edits to the new version, and the theme card then says one of two things:
- "Theme added: code edits successfully included": nothing to do.
- "Theme added: code edits could not be included": copy the edits into the new version yourself.
Keep a copy of every code change before you update.
Krown support does not move custom code between versions. See Custom work and code changes.
Code edits to section or block schemas, for example a raised block limit, can make an update fail. Keep custom code in Custom CSS or in Custom HTML / Liquid sections where possible. See Custom CSS and code.
How do I check that the update worked?
- Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes shows the new version number on the published theme, and the status "This theme is up to date".
- Your home, product, collection and cart pages look the same as before, plus any new features of the release.
