Overlay group
The Overlay group of Borders holds the popups and floating elements: newsletter popup, popovers, rotating badges, exit intent, age verification, go to top.
Applies to: Borders 3.1.0 and later. Added in: Borders 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Borders 3.1.0.
The Overlay group holds everything that floats over your store's pages: popups, small popovers and badges. Like the other section groups, it is the same on every page.
Where to find it: Online Store → Themes → Customize, the Overlay group at the bottom of the theme editor sidebar.
What the Overlay group holds
The group starts with three sections:
- Newsletter: a sign-up popup with an image and text.
- Popovers: small boxes in the corner of the screen: the cookies consent popover and text popovers for discounts or announcements.
- Rotating badges: round badges whose text turns around an icon.
With Add section inside the Overlay group you can add three more:
- Exit intent popup: a popup on desktop when the customer moves the mouse out of the page to leave.
- Age verification: a screen that covers the store until the customer confirms their age.
- Go to top: a button that scrolls back to the top of the page.
The popups are hidden in the theme editor until you select their section or block in the sidebar.
How often popups show
The Newsletter popup, the Text popovers and the Exit intent popup use the same rules:
- Each one waits for its trigger: a delay in seconds (Show popup after), or the mouse leaving the page for the exit intent popup.
- When the customer closes it, the customer's browser remembers it. It shows again only after the Popup frequency period: Show each day, Show each week, or Show each month.
- Until the customer closes it, it shows again on every page they open.
- The memory is per browser and device, not per customer account. A customer on a new device or in a private window sees the popup again.
Show each month currently shows the popup only once per browser. After the customer closes it, that browser does not see it again.
Set up a popup for a short campaign
Choose the popup
Use the Newsletter popup for sign-ups, a Text popover for a discount, or the Exit intent popup to catch customers who leave.
Write the content
Select the section or block in the Overlay group and write its content. The preview opens the popup while it is selected.
Set the timing
Set Show popup after, and Popup frequency to Show each day or Show each week.
Space out several popups
If you use several popups, give each a different Show popup after, so they do not all appear at once.
Test in a private window
Save, then open your store in a private browser window. A normal window remembers that you closed the popup and does not show it again.
Why does my popup not show again after I closed it?
Because your browser remembers that you closed it. It shows again after the Popup frequency period. To see it right away, open your store in a private window or clear the site data of your store in the browser. In the theme editor, select the section or block to open it.
