Exit intent popup section
The Exit intent popup section of Borders shows a popup on desktop when the visitor moves the mouse to the top of the page to leave.
Applies to: Borders 3.1.0 and later. Added in: Borders 1.1.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Borders 3.1.0.
The Exit intent popup opens when a customer on desktop moves the mouse to the top of the browser window, usually to close the tab or type a new address. Use it for a last offer or a sign-up reminder.
Where to find it: Online Store → Themes → Customize → Overlay group → Add section → Exit intent popup
Content
- Title shows in bold at the top. The default is "Before you leave".
- Text is the message under the title.
- Image adds an image under the text.
- Button label and Button link add a button, with Open link in a new window. Without a label, there is no button.
- Color scheme sets the popup colors.
The popup has no sign-up form. To collect emails, link the button to a page with a sign-up form, or use the Newsletter popup section.
Functionality
- The popup opens when the mouse moves up to within 20 px of the top of the window. It opens at most once per page view.
- Popup frequency sets how long the popup stays away after the customer closes it: Show each day, Show each week (the default) or Show each month.
- Show each month currently shows the popup only once per browser.
- Customers close it with the close button or by selecting the area around it.
- The section can be added once.

Why does the exit intent popup not show on mobile?
The exit intent popup reacts to the mouse, and phones and tablets have no mouse. Borders shows it on desktop only. To reach mobile customers, use the Newsletter popup section or a Text popover in the Popovers section, which open after a delay.
Why does the exit intent popup not open in the theme editor?
The mouse trigger is turned off in the theme editor, so the popup does not open while you work. Select the Exit intent popup section in the sidebar to open it in the preview. To test the trigger, use the live store in a private window.
