Collection filters and sorting

Collection filters and sorting in Seventh: turn on filtering, show filters in a drawer or a sidebar, and let customers compare products.

Applies to: Seventh 4.0.0 and later. Added in: Seventh 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-12 against Seventh 4.0.0.

Collection filters and sorting are the Collection grid settings that show filters, a sort dropdown and compare checkboxes on the Collection page. The filters come from the Shopify Search & Discovery app; Seventh decides where and how they show.

Where to find it: in the theme editor, open the template picker and select Collections → Default collection, then select the Collection grid section. The settings are under the header Filtering and sorting.

Filters and sort options come from Shopify

Shopify controls the filters, not Seventh. Set them up in the Shopify Search & Discovery app:

  • which filters exist (availability, price, product type, vendor, options, metafields)
  • their order and their names
  • whether color filters show as swatches

Seventh shows the filters that Shopify returns for each collection. Color filters that use swatches take their corner shape from Corner roundness in Theme settings → Color swatches & size options. See Shopify's guide to storefront filters.

The sort options (for example Best selling, Price low to high) also come from Shopify. The default sort order of each collection is set in Shopify admin → Products → Collections, under Sort.

Drawer or sidebar filters

Show filters as sets the filter layout on desktop:

  • Drawer (default): a bar above the products holds a Filter button, the number of results and the sort dropdown. Filter opens the filters in a drawer. The button shows how many filters are active.
  • Sidebar: the filters show in a column to the left of the products on screens 768 px wide and larger. The sort dropdown and the result count sit above the products. Use Expand sidebar filters by default to open every filter group on load, and Stick filters sidebar to the top to keep the column in view while customers scroll.

On mobile, both layouts show a Filter button that opens the filters in a drawer.

The Sidebar layout was added in Seventh 4.0.0. The release notes call the setting "Filters position"; the editor shows Show filters as.

Adding filters to your collection pages

Install Search & Discovery

Install the Shopify Search & Discovery app from the Shopify App Store, if it is not installed yet.

Create the filters

In the Search & Discovery app, open Filters and add the filters you want, for example Availability, Price, Size and Color. Save.

Turn on filtering in the theme

In the theme editor, open Collections → Default collection, select the Collection grid section and turn on Enable filtering under Filtering and sorting.

Choose the layout

Set Show filters as to Drawer or Sidebar and select Save. Open a collection on the storefront to check the filters.

Comparing products

Turn on Enable comparing in the Collection grid section.

  • Each product card then shows a compare checkbox.
  • A compare bar appears at the bottom of the screen when a customer selects a compare checkbox.
  • Customers can compare up to 4 products on the Product comparison page.

Comparing was added in Seventh 4.0.0.

Why don't the filters show on my collection page?

Because filtering is off, no filters exist, or the collection has no products. Check these in order:

  1. Enable filtering (checkbox, default: on) is on in the Collection grid section of the template that the collection uses.
  2. Filters exist in the Shopify Search & Discovery app.
  3. The collection has products. Seventh hides the filter and sort bar when a collection has no products and no active filters.

Why does a filter show values that do not match the products?

Because Shopify builds the filter values from the product data, such as options, tags and metafields. Fix the product data in Shopify admin, or change the filter in the Search & Discovery app. Seventh does not change filter values.

Can I have different filters on different collections?

No. Shopify applies the filters from Search & Discovery to every collection, and Seventh does not support choosing filters per collection. To turn off filtering on some collections, create a second collection template with Enable filtering off and assign it to those collections.
