SEO and performance theme settings

The SEO and performance theme settings remove Highlight's microdata, add collections to product breadcrumbs and preload pages on hover.

Applies to: Highlight 4.1.0 and later. Added in: Highlight 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Highlight 4.1.0.

These settings change what Highlight tells search engines about your store and how fast pages feel when customers move between them.

Where to find it: Theme settings → SEO & performance

SEO

  • Disable microdata schema removes the structured data that Highlight adds to every page: your store's name and web address as a website and an organization, and the breadcrumb trail. Product and article data is added by Shopify, not by the theme, so this setting does not affect it.
  • Improve product breadcrumb navigation (on by default) makes product links in collection grids include the collection, for example /collections/shirts/products/linen-shirt. The breadcrumb on the product page then shows that collection.

Performance

  • Preload links on hover (on by default) starts loading a page when the customer points at its link or touches it, so the page opens faster when they click. Highlight has had it since 3.3.0.

Should I disable the microdata schema?

Only if an SEO app adds its own structured data. Two sets of the same data can confuse search engines, so turn on Disable microdata schema when your SEO app asks for it. Otherwise leave it off. See SEO settings in the theme.

Because Improve product breadcrumb navigation is on. Product links in collection pages then carry the collection, so the breadcrumb on the product page can show it. Shopify keeps the plain product URL as the canonical address, so search engines still see one page per product. Turn the setting off to use plain product links everywhere.
