Cart theme settings

The Cart theme settings choose a cart drawer or cart page in Highlight, and set notes, discounts, terms checkbox, thumbnails and the free shipping bar.

Applies to: Highlight 4.1.0 and later. Added in: Highlight 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Highlight 4.1.0.

The Cart theme settings set how the cart works in Highlight: a drawer or a page, which buttons it shows, cart notes, discount codes, a terms checkbox, the thumbnail shape and the free shipping bar. They apply to the cart drawer and the cart page alike.

Where to find it: Theme settings → Cart

Cart drawer or cart page

  • Cart type sets what happens when a customer adds a product to the cart. Drawer (the default) opens a cart drawer from the side of the page, each time something is added. Page takes the customer to the cart page.
  • Drawer cart action buttons sets which buttons the cart drawer shows: a view cart button that opens the cart page, a checkout button, or both. The cart page always shows the checkout button.
  • Stick action buttons at the bottom of the cart drawer keeps the buttons visible at the bottom of the drawer while customers scroll through a long cart. It shows only when Cart type is Drawer.
  • Show quantity selector lets customers change the quantity of each item in the cart. When it is off, they can only remove an item.
  • Show additional checkout buttons adds Shopify's express checkout buttons, such as Shop Pay, PayPal or Apple Pay, under the checkout button. In the drawer they show only when the checkout button is shown.

The additional checkout buttons can't be edited, they are created on the fly by Shopify based on your available payment methods and the current customer's profile. Also, they will disappear after any change to the cart (adding more items, removing an item or changing the quantity).

Notes and discounts

  • Enable cart notes adds a text field where customers can write a note to you, for example delivery instructions. The note comes with the order in Shopify admin.
  • Enable cart discounts adds a field where customers enter a discount code before checkout. Applied codes are listed under the field, each with a remove button.
  • Discount text is a short line shown under the discount field, for example "One code per order". It shows only when Enable cart discounts is on.

Both fields show at the bottom of the cart drawer and on the cart page. The discount codes themselves are created in Shopify admin → Discounts.

Terms and conditions

  • Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout adds a checkbox above the checkout button. Customers cannot check out until they select it.
  • Checkbox label is the text next to the checkbox. It can hold a link, for example to your terms of service.

Requiring the terms and conditions checkbox

Turn on the requirement

Open Theme settings → Cart and turn on Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout.

In Checkbox label, write the text, select the words "terms and conditions" and add a link to your policy page, for example Shopify admin → Settings → Policies → Terms of service.

Test the checkout button

Add a product to the cart in the preview. The Checkout button stays greyed out until the checkbox is selected.

Media aspect ratio

Aspect ratio sets the shape of the small product thumbnails: Square (1:1), Tall (5:6, the default) or Taller (2:3). The images are cropped to fit. It applies to cart items and also to the search drawer results, the product popup of the Popups section and the product tooltips of the Image with hotspots section.

Shipping

  • Show free shipping minimum amount adds a message and a progress bar at the top of the cart: "You are … away from free shipping." until the cart reaches the amount, then "You are eligible for free shipping!".
  • Free shipping minimum amount is the amount to reach, for example 50.

The bar is only a message. The free shipping rate itself is a Shopify shipping rate that you create in Shopify admin.

Setting up the free shipping bar

Create the free shipping rate

In Shopify admin, open Settings → Shipping and delivery and add a free rate with a minimum order price, for example free shipping on orders over 50.

Turn on the bar

Open Theme settings → Cart → Shipping and turn on Show free shipping minimum amount.

Enter the same amount

Write the same number in Free shipping minimum amount, in your store's default currency.

Check the cart

Add a product to the cart in the preview. The bar shows how much is left to reach the amount.

Write only a number in Free shipping minimum amount. A value with a currency symbol or letters, such as "$50" or "50 EUR", breaks the bar.

The bar shows only when the cart has items. For customers who shop in another currency, Highlight converts the amount with Shopify's exchange rate.

Can I set a different free shipping amount per market?

No. Highlight does not support different free shipping amounts per market: the bar uses one amount, converted to the customer's currency. If your free shipping rates differ by market, turn the bar off, or ask a developer for custom work (see Custom work and code changes).

Why does the cart drawer not open when a customer adds a product?

Because Cart type is set to Page. With Page, adding a product takes the customer to the cart page instead. Set Cart type to Drawer to open the drawer.

Why is the Checkout button greyed out?

Because Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout is on and the checkbox is not selected. The button becomes active as soon as the customer selects it. More answers are in Troubleshoot the cart.
