Cart theme settings

The Cart theme settings choose a cart drawer or cart page in Split and set notes, discount codes, terms checkbox, recommendations and free shipping.

Applies to: Split 5.1.0 and later. Added in: Split 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Split 5.1.0.

Split has two kinds of cart: a cart drawer that slides in from the side each time a customer adds a product, or the cart page. These settings choose one and set what the cart shows: notes, discount codes, a terms checkbox, recommendations and a free shipping notice. They apply to the drawer and the cart page unless a setting says otherwise.

Where to find it: Theme settings → Cart

Cart type: drawer or page

  • Cart type Drawer (the default) opens the cart drawer when a customer adds a product or selects the cart icon. Page takes the customer to the cart page instead.
  • Drawer cart action buttons chooses the buttons at the bottom of the drawer: "View cart", "Checkout" or both.
  • Stick action buttons at the bottom of the cart drawer keeps the subtotal and buttons in view while the customer scrolls a long cart.
  • Show quantity selector adds minus and plus buttons to every cart item. Without it, customers can only remove an item.
  • Show additional checkout buttons adds Shopify's accelerated checkout buttons, such as Shop Pay or PayPal, under the Checkout button. In the drawer they show only when the drawer has a Checkout button.

The drawer uses the Sidebar colors from Theme settings → Colors. See Drawers. The cart page template has a few settings of its own: see Cart page.

Requiring terms and conditions

Split can ask customers to accept your terms before they check out.

Turn on the checkbox

In Theme settings → Cart → Terms and conditions, turn on Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout.

Edit Checkbox label. Select the words "terms and conditions" and add a link to your terms page, for example Shopify's terms of service policy page.

Check the cart

Add a product and open the cart. The Checkout button stays disabled until the customer selects the checkbox.

The checkbox blocks only the Checkout button. The accelerated checkout buttons (Shop Pay, PayPal and others) still work without it. If your terms must be accepted, turn off Show additional checkout buttons.

Notes and discounts

  • Enable cart notes adds a field for special instructions to the seller. The text is kept while the customer browses and is sent with the order.
  • Enable cart discounts adds a field where customers apply a discount code. The applied codes are listed under it and can be removed.
  • Discount text is a short line under the discount field, for example where to find a code. Leave it empty to show nothing.
  • Make notes & discount fields collapsible inside cart drawer folds both fields into toggles in the drawer, so the cart items stay in view. The cart page always shows them open.

Media aspect ratio

  • Aspect ratio sets the shape of small product thumbnails: cart items, predictive search results in the search drawer, the search results page, product hotspots and the product gallery thumbnails.
  • Fit media inside container shows the whole image inside that shape instead of cropping it.
  • Media border color adds a thin border around those thumbnails. Leave it transparent for none.

Product cards in grids have their own ratio: see Product card theme settings.

Product recommendations

  • Show cart recommendations adds up to 6 products to the cart drawer, under the cart items, with your Heading.
  • The products are Shopify's recommendations for the first item in the cart. Shopify decides which products appear, and learns from your store's sales over time. You can adjust them in Shopify's Search & Discovery app.
  • Enable quick buy adds the quick buy button to these products. See Quick view.
  • The cart page has its own Product recommendations section. See Cart page.

Setting up the free shipping notice

The free shipping notice shows how much more the customer needs to spend for free shipping, with a progress bar, in the cart drawer and on the cart page. It is a message only: the free shipping itself comes from your Shopify shipping rates.

Create the free shipping rate in Shopify

In Shopify admin → Settings → Shipping and delivery, add a free rate with a minimum order price, for example free shipping over 50. See Shopify's shipping rates documentation.

Turn on the notice

In Theme settings → Cart → Shipping, turn on Show free shipping minimum amount.

Enter the same amount

Type the minimum into Free shipping minimum amount, in your store's currency, with digits only: 50, not $50 or 50 USD.

Check the cart

Add a product below the amount: the cart shows "You are … away from free shipping." with the bar. Above the amount it shows "You are eligible for free shipping!".

Split converts the amount into the customer's currency with Shopify's exchange rate and rounds it. If you sell in several markets with their own free shipping rates, the notice can show a different threshold from the rate the customer actually gets. Split has one free shipping amount for all markets.

Why do the additional checkout buttons disappear?

Because Shopify creates them, not Split, and they reload when the cart changes.

The additional checkout buttons can't be edited, they are created on the fly by Shopify based on your available payment methods and the current customer's profile. Also, they will disappear after any change to the cart (adding more items, removing an item or changing the quantity).

Why can't customers select Checkout?

Because the terms checkbox is on and the customer has not selected it. With Enable terms and conditions requirement for checkout on, the Checkout button stays disabled until the customer selects the checkbox. Make the Checkbox label clear so customers see it.
