How Highlight is built
How Highlight pages are built from sections and blocks: the Header and Footer groups, the static Popups section, theme blocks and page templates.
Applies to: Highlight 4.1.0 and later. Added in: Highlight 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Highlight 4.1.0.
Every Highlight page is made of sections, and most sections contain blocks. This page explains the parts you see in the theme editor sidebar and where each one is documented.
Where to find it: Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes → Customize. The theme editor sidebar lists the sections of the page you are viewing.
Sections and blocks
- A section is a full-width area of a page, for example a Featured collection or a Slideshow: vertical.
- A block is one piece of content inside a section, for example one slide, one testimonial or one image.
- To add a section, select Add section in the theme editor sidebar and choose it from the list. The list is grouped by category: Products, Collections, Storytelling, Media & galleries, Content, Promotions, Forms and Custom.
- You can add the same section as many times as you like, each time with different settings.
- Drag sections and blocks by their handle in the sidebar to change their order.
- To hide a section or block without deleting it, point to it in the sidebar and select the eye icon.
Each section has its own page in this documentation, with its blocks. See Sections for the full list.
Header group and Footer group
Two areas are the same on every page and sit in section groups:
- The Header group holds the Announcement bar section and the Header section. See Announcement bar section and Header section.
- The Footer group holds the Text columns with icons section and the Footer section. See Footer group.
You can add more sections to these groups with Add section inside the group, for example a second announcement bar in the Footer group. A change in a group shows on every page.
The Popups section
The Popups section is a static section: it is part of the theme layout, so it is on every page and you cannot remove it or add a second one. It holds the cookie banner, the newsletter popup and your image, custom and product popups as blocks. Select it in the theme editor sidebar, after the Footer group. See Popups section.
Theme blocks in the Flex sections
Highlight 4.0.0 added two sections built with Shopify theme blocks:
- Flex cards shows a row of Card blocks.
- Flex grid places Media card and Text card blocks in a grid of 12 columns.
Inside a Card or a Text card you can add any of the 10 theme blocks: Button, Caption, Content group, Custom Liquid, Divider, Empty space, Heading, Image, Text and Star rating, plus app blocks. The other sections only accept their own blocks. See Flex cards section, Flex grid section, Cards and Blocks.
Page templates
A template sets which sections a type of page shows: the product page, collection pages, the cart, blog posts and so on. Open one from the page selector at the top of the theme editor, for example Products → Default product.
- Every template has a main section, such as Product information on the product page or Collection page on collection pages. You can add other sections above and below it.
- Highlight includes extra templates: Products → alternate (with a Gallery, a Video: background and a Collection list below the product), Products → quick-view (the Quick view popup), and Pages → contact, faq, gallery and story.
- To use a template for one product or page, select it under Theme template in the product or page editor in Shopify admin.
The template pages start with the Product page.
Can I add a section more than once?
Yes. Every section in the Add section list can be added several times, on the same page or on different pages, each copy with its own settings. The main section of a template and the static Popups section are not in the list: each exists once.
Why can I not add Heading or Button blocks inside most sections?
Because only the Card of the Flex cards section and the Text card of the Flex grid section accept theme blocks. The other sections have a fixed set of blocks of their own, listed on each section's page. To combine headings, text, buttons and images freely, use a Flex cards or Flex grid section.
