Update Highlight

How to update Highlight to the latest version, 4.1.0, without losing your settings, and what happens to code edits.

Applies to: Highlight 4.1.0 and later. Added in: Highlight 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Highlight 4.1.0.

Update Highlight from your theme library to get the newest version. Your Theme settings, sections and content carry over to the new version.

Where to find it: Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes.

Theme updates are controlled by Shopify, not by Highlight. Shopify decides how an update is offered and what is carried over. See Update your Shopify theme.

Before you update

  • Check your version: the theme card in Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes shows it, for example Highlight 3.3.4. When a newer version exists, Shopify shows an update notification on the card.
  • The newest version is Highlight 4.1.0, released 2026-09-24. Read what changed since your version in What's new in Highlight.
  • Shopify offers updates only for themes installed from the Shopify Theme Store, not for uploaded theme files.
  • Write down any code edits you or a developer made to the theme files.

Updating Highlight

Open the update notification

Open Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. On your Highlight theme, select the update notification next to the version number.

Add the new version as a draft

Select Add to draft themes. Shopify adds an updated copy of your theme. Your live store does not change yet.

Review the updated copy

Open the copy in the theme editor and check your home page, a product page, a collection page, the cart and any page that uses a custom template.

Publish the updated copy

When the copy looks right, select Publish on it in Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. Your store now runs the new Highlight version.

Do I lose my settings when I update?

No. Shopify carries over your Theme settings, the sections and blocks you added with their content, your extra templates and the texts you changed in Edit default theme content. Settings that a new version renames or removes do not come back under the old name; What's new in Highlight lists them per release.

Are my code edits kept when I update?

Only when they do not conflict with the update. Shopify tries to copy code edits into the new version and tells you on the theme card whether it could. Keep a copy of every code change before you update. Krown support does not move custom code between versions; see Custom CSS and code and Custom work and code changes. The Theme Updater Plus app can carry code edits over for the theme versions it supports.

Because Highlight 4.0.0 replaced them with Shopify's account component. The header now has an account icon that opens Shopify's sign-in sheet, with the menu you choose in Header → Customer account menu. The icon shows when customer accounts are turned on in Shopify admin → Settings → Customer accounts. See Header section.
