Header, footer and popups

Popups section

The Popups section shows Highlight's cookie banner, newsletter, image, custom and product popups on every page, with a delay and a frequency.

Applies to: Highlight 4.1.0 and later. Added in: Highlight 1.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Highlight 4.1.0.

The Popups section holds every popup of your store: the cookie banner, a newsletter signup, and image, custom and product popups. It is a static section, so it is on every page and each popup decides on which pages it opens. The section has no settings of its own; each popup is a block.

Where to find it: select Popups in the theme editor sidebar, after the Footer group. It is the same on every page.

Select Add block inside the Popups section to add a popup. The section holds up to 12 popups and starts with a Cookies and a Newsletter block.

When several popups open on the same page, they stack on top of each other. Give them different delays, or different pages, so they appear one at a time.

When a popup shows

Every popup except Cookies has the same four settings:

  • Enable popup turns the popup on. It is off by default, so a new popup does not show to customers until you turn it on.
  • Visibility sets the pages where it opens: All pages, Homepage only, Product pages only, Cart page only, or All pages except the homepage.
  • Show popup after (1 to 60 seconds) is the delay after the page loads.
  • Popup frequency sets how often the same customer sees it again: Show each day, Show each week (the default) or Show each month.

Highlight remembers the popup in the customer's browser (local storage) when the customer closes it, and counts the frequency from that moment. Until the customer closes it, the popup opens on every page that matches Visibility. A new browser or device starts again.

In the theme editor, popups never open by themselves. Select a popup's block in the sidebar to preview it, even when Enable popup is off.

Blocks

Image

  • Image: the picture the popup shows. Without an image, the popup shows a placeholder.
  • Link: makes the image a link, for example to a sale collection. Open link opens it On the same page (the default) or In a new page.
  • Text color colors the close button. Show borders adds a dashed border in that color.

Cookies

  • The cookie banner, with the buttons Accept all cookies and Decline all cookies. It has no Enable popup, Visibility, delay or frequency: it opens 1 second after the page loads, on every page, until the customer answers.
  • The answer is passed to Shopify's customer privacy settings, which turn tracking on or off for that customer, and remembered in the browser.
  • Background color, Text color and Show borders style the banner. The texts are theme texts: change them in Online Store → Themes → … → Edit default theme content, by searching for "cookies".
  • To stop showing it, delete the Cookies block or hide it with the eye icon in the sidebar.

Newsletter

  • Heading and Content: the title and the text above the email field.
  • Customers who sign up are saved in Shopify admin → Customers with email marketing consent. After they sign up, the popup shows "Thanks for subscribing!".
  • Background color, Text color and Show borders style the popup.

Custom

  • Heading and Content: a title and a rich text with links, for example a delivery notice or an opening-hours message.
  • Background color, Text color and Show borders style the popup.

Product

  • Heading and Product: a title and the product to promote. The popup shows the product image, price and title, all linking to the product page.
  • It shows the product's color swatches when Theme settings → Product card → Show color swatches is on, and its star rating when the product has Shopify review metafields.
  • Background color, Text color and Show borders style the popup. This popup is white with a border by default.

Setting up a newsletter popup

Select the Newsletter block

In the theme editor, select the Popups section and then its Newsletter block. If there is none, select Add block and choose Newsletter.

Turn it on

Turn on Enable popup.

Choose when it shows

Set Visibility, for example All pages, a Show popup after delay, for example 10 seconds, and a Popup frequency.

Write the text

Write the Heading and Content, for example the offer customers get for signing up. Select Save.

Test it in a private window

Open your store in a private browser window and wait for the delay. Sign up with a test email address and check that it appears in Shopify admin → Customers.

Setting up the cookies popup

Check your privacy settings in Shopify admin

Open Shopify admin → Settings → Customer privacy and set how customer data is collected in each region, for example only after consent in the European Union. See Cookies popup.

Keep or add the Cookies block

In the theme editor, select the Popups section and check that it has a Cookies block. If not, select Add block and choose Cookies.

In Shopify admin → Settings → Customer privacy, turn off Shopify's cookie banner, so customers see only one banner.

Change the texts if you want

Open Online Store → Themes → … → Edit default theme content, search for "cookies" and edit the title, the message and the two button labels.

Highlight shows the Cookies popup to every new customer, wherever they are, until they accept or decline. If you need a banner that shows only in some regions, use Shopify's own cookie banner instead and delete the Cookies block.

Why is my popup not showing?

Usually because Enable popup is off, the page does not match Visibility, or you already closed the popup in this browser. Popups also never open by themselves in the theme editor. Open the store in a private window and wait for Show popup after. More checks are in Troubleshoot popups.

How do I show an edited popup again to customers who closed it?

Replace the block. Highlight remembers each popup by its block, not by its text, so editing the heading or content does not reset it. Delete the popup's block and add a new one with the same content: every customer then sees it as a new popup.

Because Shopify's own cookie banner and Highlight's Cookies popup are both on. Turn off Shopify's banner in Shopify admin → Settings → Customer privacy, or delete the Cookies block, so only one shows.
