Update Kingdom
How to update Kingdom to the latest version from the Shopify Theme Store, keep your settings, and check what changed in each release.
Applies to: Kingdom 6.2.0 and later. Added in: Kingdom 2.0.0. Last checked: 2026-10-13 against Kingdom 6.2.0.
Update Kingdom from your theme library to get the newest version. Your theme settings, sections and content carry over to the new version.
Where to find it: Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes
Theme updates are controlled by Shopify, not by Kingdom. Shopify decides how an update is offered and what is carried over. See Updating themes in the Shopify Help Center.
Before you update
- Check your version. The theme library shows the version number on each Kingdom theme, for example Kingdom 6.2.0. When a newer version exists, Shopify shows an update notification instead.
- Kingdom must be installed from the Shopify Theme Store. Shopify offers updates only for themes installed from the Theme Store, not for uploaded theme files.
- Make a list of any code edits you or a developer made to the theme files.
- Read the release notes in What's new in Kingdom, especially when you move to a new major version, such as from Kingdom 5 to Kingdom 6.
Setting up the update
Open the update notification
Open Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. On your Kingdom theme, select the update notification that replaces the version number. Select View release notes to see what changed.
Add the new version as a draft
Select Add to draft themes. Shopify adds a copy named "Updated copy of" followed by your theme name. Your live store does not change yet.
Review the updated copy
Open the updated copy in the theme editor and check your main pages: the home page, a product page, a collection page, the cart drawer and the cart page. Check the sidebar menus and any pages that use custom templates.
Publish the updated copy
When the copy looks right, select Publish on it in Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. Your store now runs the new Kingdom version.
Will I lose my settings when I update?
No. Shopify carries your theme settings, your sections and blocks with their content, your templates, your app embeds and the texts you changed in Edit default theme content over to the updated copy. Settings that a new Kingdom version renames or removes do not come back under the old name; the release notes in What's new in Kingdom name them.
Why are my code changes gone after an update?
Because Shopify copies code edits only when they do not conflict with the new version. The theme card then says "Theme added: code edits could not be included", and you must copy the edits into the new version yourself. Keep a copy of every code change before you update. Krown support does not move custom code between versions; see Custom work and code changes.
Code edits to section or block schemas can make an update fail. Keep custom CSS in the theme editor's Custom CSS fields where possible, so it carries over as a setting. See Custom CSS and code.
How do I check that the update worked?
Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes shows the new version number on the published theme. Your pages look the same as before, plus the new features of the release.
