Troubleshoot sections and blocks

Answers to the most common problems with Highlight's sections, cards and blocks. Each answer links the page with the full settings.

Why does my YouTube video not load in the Video: popup section?Copy Anchor Link

The video address is in a format the section cannot read. Paste the complete address from the browser's address bar, for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcJtL7QggTI. Do not use the share link (https://youtu.be/xcJtL7QggTI) or an address with &feature=youtu.be. Also check that the video is public or unlisted and allows embedding. See Video: popup section.

Why does the video not start by itself in the Video: popup section?Copy Anchor Link

The Video: popup section starts the video only when a customer selects the play button, never on page load. Highlight then asks YouTube and Vimeo to play at once; some phone browsers need one more tap on the player. For a video that plays by itself, use the Video: background section with a video uploaded to Shopify.

Why does the background video not play on my phone?Copy Anchor Link

The phone blocked autoplay. Depending on the internet connection, the phone settings, the battery level (low power mode) and the browser, phones turn video autoplay off. Upload a Fallback image in the Video: background section: Highlight shows it whenever the video cannot play. See Video: background section.

Why does a video in Slideshow: vertical not show?Copy Anchor Link

Media 2 and Media 3 of a slide show only when their Image is set, and the image also sets the shape of the video. Upload an image in every media area that has a video. See Slideshow: vertical section.

Why is the whole image a link?Copy Anchor Link

In the Images with text overlay section, a block with a Link but no Button label turns the entire image into the link. Write a Button label to put the link on a button only. See Images with text overlay section.

Why do the links inside my text card not work?Copy Anchor Link

The Text card has its own Link. If the entire card has a link, the inner links and buttons do not work. Clear the card's Link in the Flex grid section to use the buttons. See Text card.

Why does a flex grid card get taller than the others?Copy Anchor Link

Its content needs more room than Desktop card height (minimum) gives. Cards grow to fit their text, and all rows of a Flex grid share one height. Shorten the text, lower Text padding, or give the card more columns or rows. See Flex grid section.

Why are my hotspots in the wrong place on mobile?Copy Anchor Link

The section has a Mobile image, and the hotspots use their Mobile hotspot offsets on it. Switch the editor preview to mobile and adjust the mobile offsets of each hotspot. Without a mobile image, the desktop positions are used everywhere. See Image with hotspots section.

Why does my gallery layout change when I add an image?Copy Anchor Link

The Gallery section sizes each image by its position in a pattern of five. Adding or removing an image moves the others to new sizes. Reorder the blocks until the layout suits you. See Gallery section.

Why does a section not show on the page?Copy Anchor Link

Check these in order:

1. The section is hidden: select the eye icon next to it in the theme editor sidebar.
2. The section has nothing to show: a Video: popup without Video URL, a Flex section or Gallery without blocks, or a Products slider with an empty collection.
3. You are editing another template: check the page menu at the top of the theme editor, and which template the page or product uses in Shopify admin.
